UK Airport Reopens After £160M Revamp, 5 Years Post-Closure

Doncaster Sheffield Airport (DSA) is on track to reopen after a significant £160 million revamp. This investment aims to restore the airport’s status as an international travel hub, five years after its closure. The original closure in 2022 stemmed from financial challenges faced by its owner, Peel Group, leading them to deem the operation “unviable.”

Historical Significance of Doncaster Sheffield Airport

DSA has a rich history, initially serving as an airfield during World War I. Over the years, it evolved into a commercial airport known as Robin Hood Airport. From 2005, DSA offered flights to popular destinations such as:

  • Alicante
  • Majorca
  • Paris

Funding and Government Support

The journey towards reopening began with the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA) approving the £160 million funding in September 2025. This decision followed intense campaigning by local residents and politicians, enjoying substantial support from the British Government. SYMCA had previously committed £16 million towards this initiative.

Mayor’s Statement

Mayor Oliver Coppard expressed optimism regarding the project, stating, “We’re reopening DSA. Today, we’ve made a historic decision to invest in plans to reopen Doncaster Sheffield Airport.” He emphasized the need for a well-structured plan to push forward with the airport’s revival.

Future of Doncaster Sheffield Airport

While significant passenger operations are not anticipated until summer 2028, there may be limited passenger services and cargo flights starting next winter. Local officials are actively working on various initiatives to aid the airport’s reopening:

  • Coordinating with the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) and the Department for Transport on airspace changes.
  • Establishing an Airport Consultative Committee, with the first meeting scheduled for late January.
  • Preparing the terminal refurbishment design.
  • Recruiting essential personnel.

Community Engagement

Mayor Ros Jones reiterated the importance of public support in a recent update on Facebook. “Thank you for your ongoing public support because without your backing we wouldn’t have got to this place,” she mentioned. Plans will evolve in 2026, with more updates expected as work progresses towards fully reopening Doncaster Sheffield Airport.
