USA 9, Great Britain 1 — Schwarber's 427-Foot Bomb Breaks Open WBC 2026 Thriller in Houston
Team USA is 2-0 at the 2026 World Baseball Classic. Kyle Schwarber delivered the thunderous blow Saturday night at Daikin Park in Houston, launching a home run deep into the second deck in right field to flip the script after Great Britain's stunning first-pitch homer had the crowd briefly rattled.
Final Score: USA 9, Great Britain 1 — The Numbers Tell the Story
Team USA pitchers combined for 17 strikeouts while walking none — a Team USA World Baseball Classic record. The rest of the Great Britain lineup outside Nate Eaton went 0-for-24 with 17 strikeouts. Jazz Chisholm Jr. wore the golden sombrero, going 0-for-4 with four strikeouts in the loss.
Gunnar Henderson finished the game 4-for-5 with two RBI, while Ernie Clement went 1-for-3 with two walks and three runs scored.
The First Pitch That Shocked Daikin Park — Nate Eaton's Homer
Tarik Skubal chose the fastball as his first pitch of the 2026 World Baseball Classic. His offering clocked in at 95 mph and caught a bit too much off the plate. Nate Eaton did not miss it — his drive to left-center was initially ruled a double but replay review revealed it was indeed a home run, giving the Brits a 1-0 lead after one pitch. Eaton has just two home runs in 268 career plate appearances in his MLB career.
Ernie Clement's Spark — The Play That Unlocked Everything
It took only one error from Great Britain to open the floodgates. Clement reached first on a bad throw from Great Britain third baseman Ivan Johnson. He moved to third on a double from Pete Crow-Armstrong and scored on a wild pitch. Two pitches later, Schwarber hit the ball 427 feet, deep into the second deck. Gunnar Henderson brought in two more with a bases-loaded single.
Skubal Dominant After the First Pitch
After allowing the first-pitch homer, Skubal downed nine of the next 10 Great Britain hitters to end his outing, finishing with five strikeouts. Clay Holmes, David Bednar, Griffin Jax, and Brad Keller completed the dominant pitching performance.
Schwarber's WBC Legacy Grows
Schwarber now has a .727 slugging percentage and 1.243 OPS in his seven career WBC games. He also hit a massive upper-deck home run against Japan in the 2023 championship game. After the win, Schwarber said: "I think the emotional side of it is what we're wearing across our chest: USA."
Next Up: USA vs. Mexico — Monday Night Heavyweight
Team USA has won its first two games of the tournament entering a heavyweight clash against Mexico on Monday — the most hyped matchup of Pool B. The U.S. lost to Mexico 11-5 in pool play at the 2023 Classic, and both Schwarber and manager Mark DeRosa have not forgotten it.
USA vs. Mexico tips off Monday, March 9, at 8 p.m. ET on Fox at Daikin Park in Houston, with Paul Skenes expected to take the mound for Team USA.
