Coco Gauff Retires With Left Arm Injury — Alexandra Eala Reaches Indian Wells Round of 16
Alexandra Eala's stunning Indian Wells 2026 run continues. World No. 4 Coco Gauff was forced to retire with a left arm injury Sunday night at the BNP Paribas Open, with Eala dominating 6-2, 2-0 when the match ended after just 54 minutes. The result sends the 20-year-old Filipino star into the Round of 16 for the first time in her career.
How the Match Ended — Gauff Walked to the Net
Gauff received medical treatment toward the end of the first set when down 5-2. A trainer massaged her left shoulder as well as her forearm. In between sets they applied a compression bandage to Gauff's left forearm. When Eala broke in the second game of the second set, Gauff walked to the net. Eala did not notice initially, and the American leaned on the net before her opponent turned and walked forward to embrace her.
During their brief conversation at the net, Gauff explained to Eala that she felt sharp pain in her forearm — then retired from the match. This was only the second career retirement for Gauff, who has built a reputation for her resilience and durability. Her only other mid-match retirement was in Cincinnati in 2022 when she rolled her ankle.
Eala Was In Complete Control Before the Injury
Gauff, who leads the entire WTA Tour in double faults in 2026 by a wide margin, shot herself in the foot with seven double faults — all coming in the first set. Eala stormed back from 0-40 down in the sixth game of the opening set to break Gauff and grab a commanding 4-2 lead, then won the next two games to close out the set 6-2.
Eala played outstanding tennis from the first ball, looking extremely prepared. The injury played a major role in the outcome, but the young Filipina also produced a strong performance throughout, mixing drop shots and cross-court rallies to keep Gauff constantly moving.
Eala Breaks Philippine Tennis History
Eala becomes the first Filipino player to reach the Round of 16 at Indian Wells since the tournament's inception. She now owns a 3-3 record against Top 5 opponents, with wins over Madison Keys and Iga Swiatek at the 2025 Miami Open, and now Gauff at Indian Wells 2026.
Eala was spotted crying as Gauff left the court — underscoring that despite the bittersweet nature of the victory, the moment still carried enormous emotional weight for the young Filipino.
Eala's On-Court Speech on International Women's Day
Eala dedicated her on-court interview to International Women's Day, saying: "I really didn't want to win this way, but this is still a big moment for me. I want to say thank you to the incredible women who have paved the way and who have advocated for themselves and for other women. Among them is Coco, so thank you Coco for being an amazing competitor and an amazing role model. I really hope that everything is well and you will recover soon."
Gauff's Injury Concern — Could She Miss Miami Open?
The biggest concern is how serious and severe the injury is because it sounded a bit scary and unpredictable, which may indicate it is nerve-related. The Miami Open starts in a week, and it would be a great loss if Gauff — the top-ranked American and reigning French Open champion — was not at the tournament, where she is also a former doubles champion.
What Is Next for Alexandra Eala at Indian Wells 2026
Eala's next opponent in the Round of 16 is 14th seed Linda Noskova, who came from a set down to beat Sorana Cirstea in just under two and a half hours. This will be the first career meeting between the two players.
