Apple MacBook Neo: $599 — The Most Affordable Mac Ever Goes on Sale March 11, 2026
Apple MacBook Neo

Apple just rewrote the rulebook on Mac pricing. The MacBook Neo was announced March 4, 2026, and goes on sale this Wednesday, March 11 — and at $599, it is the cheapest Mac laptop Apple has ever sold. Here is everything you need to know.

MacBook Neo Price — Starting at $599, $499 for Students

The MacBook Neo starts at $599 for the 256GB model and $699 for the 512GB version. Education customers pay just $499 — making it the most affordable laptop Apple has ever introduced.

For years, the cheapest way into the Mac lineup was a $999 laptop. The MacBook Neo cuts that price nearly in half.

MacBook Neo Release Date — March 11, 2026

Pre-orders began at launch on March 4, with general release beginning on March 11, 2026. The MacBook Neo goes on sale in Apple Stores and authorized retailers nationwide on Wednesday. Supply constraints are already expected given the enormous demand.

Full MacBook Neo Specs

The MacBook Neo features a 13-inch Liquid Retina display with a 2408 x 1506 resolution, the Apple A18 Pro chip with a 6-core CPU and 5-core GPU, 8GB of unified memory, two USB-C ports, a headphone jack, Wi-Fi 6E, and Bluetooth 6.

Battery life reaches up to 16 hours. The 1080p FaceTime HD camera, dual-mic array, and two side-firing speakers with Spatial Audio round out the feature set.

Colors — The Most Colorful MacBook Lineup Ever

MacBook Neo launches in four colors: Silver, Blush, Citrus, and Indigo — each with a color-matched keyboard. The enclosure is built from 90% recycled aluminum, making it the highest recycled content of any Apple product.

What You Give Up — The Trade-Offs

To hit the $599 price point, Apple made several hardware cuts. There is no backlit keyboard on the base 256GB model. The secondary USB-C port runs at USB 2.0 speeds. Memory is permanently locked at 8GB. There is no Thunderbolt. The 256GB base model ships without Touch ID — only the $699 512GB model includes a fingerprint scanner.

A18 Pro vs. M-Series — What Is the Difference?

Unlike the MacBook Air and Pro, which run on Apple's M-series processors, the Neo uses the A18 Pro chip — the same family of silicon that powers the iPhone 16 Pro. That gives Apple room to push the price dramatically lower, even if it comes with less processing power than the rest of the Mac lineup.

Even though it runs on an iPhone-class chip, the Neo still uses the full macOS operating system found across Apple's laptop lineup. Apple said it delivers AI tasks up to three times faster than comparable PC laptops.

MacBook Neo vs. MacBook Air

The MacBook Air M5 is more powerful and better equipped — but at nearly double the price of the Neo. For many users, the MacBook Neo does exactly what they need at half the cost. The Air has 18 hours of battery life compared to Neo's 16 hours.

Who Is It For?

The MacBook Neo is the ideal fit for students, first-time Mac buyers switching from iPhone, and casual home users who want full macOS without a premium price tag. Power users and creatives should look at the MacBook Air or MacBook Pro instead.
