Kansas City International Airport Evacuated: All Clear Declared, Normal Operations Resumed
Kansas City International Airport Evacuated

Kansas City International Airport was evacuated Sunday morning after a reported bomb threat sent thousands of travelers onto the tarmac and triggered a multi-hour shutdown. The all-clear has since been issued and the airport is fully back in operation — but the disruption rippled across flight schedules nationwide.

What Happened at Kansas City Airport

Travelers at Kansas City International Airport were evacuated Sunday after a possible threat was reported just before noon. Airport Police immediately began working with the FBI to determine whether the threat was credible. Flights to and from the airport were grounded and traffic was diverted away from the airport. Photos shared with local media showed passengers being led off planes onto the tarmac and others leaving the terminals.

Among the thousands caught up in the chaos was a Nashville man and his son who were returning home from a college visit and were about to go through TSA screening when airport staff ordered everyone to evacuate. He described the scene as organized chaos, saying staff directed passengers to move further and further from the terminal each time they stopped — and each time they found a spot they thought was far enough away, they were asked to move even further back.

The Suspicious Vehicle in the Parking Garage

Once law enforcement determined no credible threat existed inside the terminal, the evacuation was lifted and normal operations resumed roughly two hours after it began. However, the parking garage remained closed for several additional hours, not opening until around 6 p.m. ET. During a sweep of the garage, a vehicle on the top floor was identified as suspicious by K-9 units. KCPD Bomb and Arson was called in to investigate and ultimately determined there was no credible threat.

FBI Director and Transportation Secretary Respond

FBI Director Kash Patel posted on social media confirming the threat was reviewed and determined not to be credible, adding that the terminal had been swept, cleared, and that normal operations were resuming. He said the FBI and law enforcement partners had quickly responded to the scene and secured the area.

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy thanked law enforcement including the FBI for their timely response, writing that the safety of passengers, airport staff, and crew members is always the top priority. Patel also warned that threats like these are a federal crime and that the FBI and law enforcement partners will fully investigate and bring to justice anyone responsible.

Flight Disruptions — 127 Delays, 2 Cancellations

Flight tracking data showed 127 delays and two cancellations being reported at Kansas City International Airport in the aftermath of the evacuation. Passengers at airports across the country were held at gates or on taxiways while the incident was being resolved — a standard aviation ground stop procedure during active security investigations.

Not the First Time at KCI

A similar incident unfolded at Kansas City International on December 31, 2025, when travelers were evacuated due to a potential threat in an unsecured area. Law enforcement ultimately determined there was no credible threat to the airport in that incident as well. No arrests have been announced in connection with Sunday's threat.
