SpiceX Expands with Bakery Addition at Second Location
SpiceX is expanding its culinary offerings with the recent opening of SpiceX Bakehouse in St. John’s. Located at 622 Empire Avenue, this new bakery marks a significant addition to the well-known brand.
SpiceX Bakery Opening
The grand unveiling of SpiceX Bakehouse is described by owner Mithun Mathew as a fulfilling achievement. “It’s a dream come true moment to have our own bakery,” he shared with CBC Radio’s The St. John’s Morning Show. This bakery is situated in the original SpiceX location, which commenced operations in 2020.
Transitioning from Grocery to Bakery
In late 2024, Mathew transitioned the former Blackmarsh Superette into SpiceX: Blackmarsh Superette, retaining the previous staff to preserve culinary expertise. This transition created a unique opportunity for a food and cultural exchange.
A Diverse Menu
SpiceX Bakehouse will offer a variety of delectable items, including:
- Traditional Newfoundland-style white bread, baked fresh daily
- Honey cake, a famous treat in Ukraine
- Cookies, flakies, and danishes
- Classic Newfoundland cookies such as moose farts
- Ready-made SpiceX meals for convenient dining
The bakery will continue to fuse various cultural elements, integrating items like tandoori chicken, curry, Jiggs’ dinner, fish and chips, beef curry poutine, and butter chicken pizza into its offerings.

According to Mathew, the bakery expansion was driven by the inability to meet previous demand at their Blackmarsh location. “We couldn’t keep up with the demand,” he explained. “Now we have the capacity to serve the local community better.”

The lead baker, Tina Whitten, noted that the community has shown outstanding enthusiasm for the bakery. In the days leading up to the opening, locals were eager to visit and see what the bakery had to offer. “They are more excited than we are,” Mathew remarked, reflecting the positive anticipation surrounding the bakery.
