NL East Insights: Wentz, Fulton, and Miller Updates
The NL East provides a complex landscape as teams manage player injuries and potential roster changes. Recent updates focus on three key players: Joey Wentz of the Braves, Dax Fulton of the Marlins, and Aidan Miller of the Phillies.
Joey Wentz and the Braves’ Rotation Concerns
Joey Wentz faced a concerning moment during a game against the Rays when he was carted off the field with a right leg injury. Fortunately, early assessments suggest that the injury may not be severe. Wentz was hurt while covering first base during a bunt attempt in the fifth inning. He was able to move to and from the cart without assistance, indicating the injury might be precautionary.
The Braves have already dealt with injury challenges, impacting their rotation depth this spring. Spencer Schwellenbach and Hurston Waldrep are currently on the injured list following elbow surgeries. This situation has allowed Wentz to compete for the fifth spot in the Braves’ rotation, where he has posted a respectable 3.18 ERA over 5 2/3 innings in Grapefruit League play.
If Wentz’s injury proves more serious, options like Bryce Elder and non-roster invite Martin Perez may step in for the starting spot.
Dax Fulton’s Path to Recovery
Dax Fulton has been optioned to the minor league camp with the Marlins. Manager Clayton McCullough noted that Fulton is closer to being big-league ready. The expectation is that he might make an appearance out of the Marlins’ bullpen during the regular season.
Fulton, a second-round pick in the 2020 draft, faced substantial setbacks due to UCL surgery that kept him off the field for most of the 2023 and 2024 seasons. After returning in 2025, he recorded a 5.38 ERA over 103 2/3 innings in Double-A and Triple-A, starting 22 out of 23 games. The Marlins still see potential in Fulton as a starting pitcher but may opt to ease him into the majors as a reliever.
Aidan Miller’s Ongoing Injury Struggles
Aidan Miller, the Phillies’ top prospect, continues to battle lower-back issues, which may lead him to begin the season on the Triple-A injured list. This situation follows a similar injury that plagued him at the end of the 2025 minor league season. Despite the setback, Phillies manager Rob Thomson expressed optimism regarding Miller’s recovery.
Thomson mentioned that Miller has not swung a bat in two weeks, emphasizing the team’s focus on ensuring he regains full health before returning to play. Described as one of baseball’s top position-player prospects, Miller aims for a major league debut in 2026 and a potential starting role by 2027.
- Joey Wentz – Braves left-hander, potential injury concerns, 3.18 ERA in Grapefruit action.
- Dax Fulton – Marlins prospect, optioned to minor leagues, expectation of bullpen debut.
- Aidan Miller – Phillies top prospect, battling lower-back issues, aims for 2026 MLB debut.
The NL East dynamics are ever-changing as teams manage both injuries and player development, setting the stage for an intriguing season ahead.
