Georgia Tech Dismisses Coach Damon Stoudamire After 12-Game Losing Streak

Georgia Tech has terminated the contract of head coach Damon Stoudamire, following a disappointing conclusion to the basketball season. Stoudamire’s dismissal came one day after the Yellow Jackets recorded their 12th consecutive loss, finishing the season with an overall record of 11-20 and a dismal 2-16 in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC).

Georgia Tech’s Struggles Under Stoudamire

The decision was announced by athletic director Ryan Alpert, after the team concluded their season with a narrow 79-76 defeat against Clemson. This loss sealed Georgia Tech’s position at the bottom of the ACC standings, preventing the team from qualifying for the conference tournament.

Coaching Record and Background

During his three-year tenure, Stoudamire compiled a 42-55 overall record, which included a 19-39 mark in the ACC. His time with the Yellow Jackets followed a brief coaching stint at Pacific, where he achieved a record of 71-77 and was recognized as the conference’s coach of the year in 2020.

  • Overall Record at Georgia Tech: 42 wins, 55 losses
  • ACC Record: 19 wins, 39 losses
  • Season Record: 11 wins, 20 losses
  • Last Conference Finish: 2-16, last place

Future Prospects for Georgia Tech Basketball

In a statement, Alpert thanked Stoudamire for his dedication to the program and highlighted his respect within the community. “Georgia Tech men’s basketball has a proud history,” Alpert noted, emphasizing the university’s commitment to find a coach capable of developing a championship-level program.

Greg Gary, currently an assistant coach and former head coach at Mercer, will take over as the interim head coach while the search for a permanent replacement begins. Stoudamire was appointed as head coach on March 14, 2023, just days after Josh Pastner’s exit, and previously served as an assistant coach for the Boston Celtics since 2021.

Georgia Tech looks to strengthen its basketball program and aims to leverage resources necessary to compete for championships in the upcoming seasons.
