Raducanu Beats Zakharova 6-1, 6-3 and Advances at Indian Wells
Emma Raducanu (raducanu) beat Anastasia Zakharova 6-1, 6-3 to reach the third round at Indian Wells, the straight-sets win immediately moving her deeper into the WTA 1, 000 event. Thursday at 2: 30 p. m. ET — the victory sets up a potential third-round meeting with Amanda Anisimova if Anisimova defeats Anna Blinkova.
Raducanu Dominates Zakharova 6-1, 6-3
Raducanu closed the match in two sets, taking the first set 6-1 and the second 6-3 to secure progression to the third round. She won a dominant share of points on serve in the opening set, converting a high percentage of first-serve points and conceding only six points across four service games in that set.
Match Flow: Raducanu Raced to an Early Lead and Closed Out After a Short Rally
The British number one raced to a 3-0 lead in the opening set before Zakharova recorded her first game. A double fault from Zakharova handed raducanu three break points in the seventh game of the second set; Raducanu converted the second to move up by a double break and put herself in position to serve for the match. Zakharova then produced a late break, but Raducanu immediately broke back and finished the contest on her opponent’s serve.
Raducanu’s Team and Recent Form in California
Raducanu has reunited with Mark Petchey on a day-to-day basis at the tournament and has been working closely with hitting partner Alexis Canter. She previously parted company with coach Francisco Roig and has said she will “tap into a few people” for coaching advice going forward. The win follows a range of recent results that included a run to a final in Cluj and some early exits in other events earlier in the season.
Earlier in the Indian Wells schedule Raducanu was listed as due on Court Two against Amanda Anisimova and experienced a delay before coming on court; tournament play elsewhere — including a deciding third set on another court — extended her wait before her match began. The straight-sets victory over Zakharova now puts her into the section of the draw where an Anisimova matchup is possible.
Clarity on Raducanu’s next confirmed opponent is expected after Amanda Anisimova’s match against Anna Blinkova concludes; that match is scheduled later this evening at 7: 00 p. m. ET.
