Etsu Basketball faces Western Carolina next after reaching SoCon semifinals
Etsu basketball now has a same-day turnaround with a Southern Conference Tournament semifinal spot on the line in Asheville, after surviving the quarterfinal round without an upset. Saturday at 4: 00 p. m. ET, East Tennessee State will face No. 5 seed Western Carolina at Harrah’s Cherokee Center, a matchup that follows an 83-76 win over The Citadel.
East Tennessee State moves from quarterfinal win to a 4: 00 p. m. ET semifinal
The immediate change for East Tennessee State is the opponent and the stakes: the Buccaneers are no longer in a one-and-done quarterfinal, but in a semifinal against Western Carolina scheduled for 4: 00 p. m. ET at Harrah’s Cherokee Center in Asheville, North Carolina. The shift comes quickly after East Tennessee State defeated The Citadel 83-76 to advance.
The quarterfinal result also reshaped the bracket dynamic around the Buccaneers. East Tennessee State was the only better-seeded team to avoid an upset in the quarterfinals, leaving the team as one of the remaining higher seeds as the tournament moves into its next round.
Brooks Savage presses for balance as Western Carolina awaits ETSU
For ETSU, the consequence of reaching the semifinal is that the margin for an uneven performance narrows, especially against a Western Carolina team that swept the Buccaneers in the regular season. Head coach Brooks Savage said the focus must be on staying balanced on both sides of the ball as the team tries to carry momentum forward.
“We demand such an effort defensively that maybe sometimes we dip a little bit offensively, ” Savage said. “We’ve got to move the ball, let’s move it inside out, just simple stuff. “
The emphasis on offensive execution follows a quarterfinal in which Blake Barkley scored 24 points in the 83-76 win over The Citadel, a performance that helped push the Buccaneers into the program’s first Southern Conference Tournament semifinal appearance since 2024.
The Citadel loss sets the semifinal field alongside Furman and UNC Greensboro
The semifinal berth was secured when East Tennessee State beat The Citadel 83-76 in the quarterfinals in Asheville. With that result, the Buccaneers advanced into a semifinal round that also includes a second matchup between No. 6 seed Furman and No. 7 seed UNC Greensboro.
Still, the next test is specific: Western Carolina enters as the No. 5 seed and will meet East Tennessee State at 4: 00 p. m. ET at Harrah’s Cherokee Center. If the Buccaneers can maintain the balance Brooks Savage described and avoid the offensive dips he referenced, East Tennessee State will extend its tournament run beyond Saturday afternoon.
