Kansas City Airport Evacuation Today: MCI Bomb Threat Cleared — FBI Says Threat Not Credible, Terminal Reopened
Breaking — Updated 3:30 p.m. ET, March 8, 2026
Kansas City International Airport is back open. The MCI bomb threat that triggered a full terminal evacuation Sunday morning has been resolved. The FBI declared the threat not credible and cleared the terminal within hours, but not before approximately 2,000 passengers were forced onto the tarmac and four Southwest Airlines flights were diverted.
What Happened at Kansas City Airport Today
The crisis began shortly after 11:15 a.m. CT on March 8, 2026, when officials were alerted to a potential security threat at Kansas City International Airport. Airport spokesperson Jackson Overstreet confirmed that authorities received the report and immediately began emergency procedures. As a precaution, sections of the airport terminal were evacuated while investigators attempted to verify the credibility of the threat.
Around 12:05 p.m. CT, travelers stuck at KCI reported that agents had opened the gates onto the tarmac and advised passengers to line up between Terminal A and Terminal B.
FBI Declares Threat Not Credible — MCI Terminal Reopened
FBI Director Kash Patel confirmed in a statement: "FBI and our law enforcement partners quickly responded to the scene and secured the area. The threat was reviewed and determined not to be credible. Terminal has been swept, cleared, and normal operations" have resumed.
Around 1:50 p.m. CT, KCI confirmed that terminals were set to reopen. Investigators continued sweeping the parking garages even as the main terminal cleared. Traffic began moving through airport lots once again shortly after the all-clear was issued.
2,000 Passengers Forced Onto the Tarmac
Roughly 2,000 people were directed outside the terminal and onto the tarmac as authorities cleared the building. Flights arriving at the airport were halted on taxiways while crews waited for clearance from security officials, and some passengers reported being stuck inside aircraft after landing.
Videos recorded by passengers spread rapidly across social media, showing hundreds of travelers leaving the terminal and gathering on the airport grounds. In one widely shared clip, travelers can be seen walking down emergency stairways while emergency vehicles moved nearby.
Southwest Airlines Diverts Four Flights
Southwest Airlines confirmed that four flights heading to KCI were diverted, with officials saying nothing is more important than the safety of its customers. A pilot aboard a plane at Orlando bound for Kansas City informed passengers of the active bomb threat over the intercom, saying authorities were sweeping the airport and that sometimes these things turn out to be a hoax and sometimes they are serious.
Aircraft scheduled to depart for Kansas City from other airports were held on the ground. Inbound and outbound flights experienced significant delays while the terminal sweep was underway.
FBI and Kansas City Airport Police Joint Response
The Kansas City Aviation Department confirmed the evacuation, saying airport police worked with the FBI to substantiate any potential threat. The FBI confirmed awareness of the incident and said personnel were working with city and airport partners to determine the credibility of the threat.
No injuries were reported at any point during the evacuation. The nature and origin of the bomb threat — including whether it was called in or written — has not been publicly disclosed. No arrests have been announced. The FBI investigation into the source of the threat at Kansas City International Airport remains ongoing.
