Pokémon Pokopia Review: The Nintendo Switch 2 Life-Sim That Became the Best-Rated Pokémon Game Ever
Pokémon Pokopia

Pokémon Pokopia is out now, and it has already made history. Released on March 5, 2026, exclusively for Nintendo Switch 2, the new life-simulation spin-off has earned the highest Metacritic score of any Pokémon game ever made — and critics are calling it one of the best games of the year.

What Is Pokémon Pokopia?

Pokémon Pokopia is a life simulation game co-developed by Game Freak and Koei Tecmo's Omega Force, published by Nintendo and The Pokémon Company for the Nintendo Switch 2. It is a spin-off of the main Pokémon series. Pokopia stars a Ditto that uses its ability to transform to imitate a human, using this ability to help cultivate the world around it and assist other Pokémon it finds along the way.

The cozy life-sim game is part Minecraft, part Animal Crossing. What makes Pokopia unique is Ditto's ability to learn new moves by copying other Pokémon. You learn how to water plants by unlocking Squirtle, for example, or cut down trees after meeting Scyther. The goal is to attract as many Pokémon as possible to your city, which you build over time.

Pokémon Pokopia Review Scores — A Historic Moment for the Franchise

Pokémon Pokopia received highly positive reviews from critics, becoming one of the best-reviewed games of 2026 at the time of release and the highest-rated Pokémon game on Metacritic.

Based on 67 critic reviews, the game currently holds an 88 score on Metacritic with 97 percent positive reviews and zero negative ones. The user score sits at 8.5 out of 10 based on 366 ratings.

Pokopia surpasses Pokémon Sun and Moon, HeartGold and SoulSilver, and Black and White, all of which hold an 87 on Metacritic. Although Pokémon Y also has an 88 Metascore, its counterpart Pokémon X sits at 87, lowering the average across both 3DS games.

What Critics Are Saying About Pokopia

VGC calls it "Pokémon's best spin-off," writing that the need to grind late in the game "can't dull the shine" of the overall experience and that it is "as full of discovery at 100 hours as it was at one."

Nintendo Life awarded it 8 out of 10, calling it "the freshest Pokémon experience in a long time, bursting at the seams with charm and content that rewards both curiosity and creativity."

GAMINGbible gave Pokopia a perfect 100, writing that the game "is a sum of its parts, without a single weak link in the chain" and calling it a strong Game of the Year contender.

Pokémon Pokopia Gameplay — 300 Pokémon, Real-Time Clock, Multiplayer

The game features 300 Pokémon selected from Generations I through IX. Players can find each Pokémon in different habitats that Ditto needs to create in order for them to appear, such as planting grass under a tree or putting a punching bag next to a bench. Each Pokémon has its own needs — for example, Hoothoot enjoys darkness.

The game features a day and night cycle linked to real-world time. Some Pokémon and events only appear at specific times or on certain days. Some larger buildings require real-world time to complete, adding a layer of realism to your town's development.

Up to four players can play together in online and local wireless multiplayer. GameShare is also supported, so players can share the game with someone who does not own it.

Pokémon Pokopia First In-Game Event: Hoppip Season

The first limited-time in-game event, "More Spores for Hoppip," runs from Monday, March 9, 2026, at 1 p.m. ET through Tuesday, March 24, 2026. During the event, special cotton spores can be collected and exchanged for picnic-themed furniture items. By using those items to create habitats, players can also befriend Skiploom and Jumpluff — Pokémon that cannot be encountered outside of this event.
