Ambassade Etats Unis Oslo: Neighbors Describe Three ‘Bangs’ and a Layer of Smoke
A 16-year-old resident identified as Edvard said he and his mother first thought the sound came from their home before seeing flashing lights and a crowd of police in the street; others nearby reported hearing three distinct “bangs” and seeing a thick layer of smoke outside the embassy entrance. No one was injured, and officials described the physical damage as minor, with visible cracks on a heavy glass door and shattered glass in the snow outside the consular entrance.
Oslo Police and Commander Michael Dellemyr Describe On‑scene Response
Investigators worked through the night inspecting the site, deploying police dogs, drones and helicopters while searching for one or more potential perpetrators; Commander Michael Dellemyr said investigators believe the explosion had a human origin and that they “had an idea of the cause” but would not detail what exploded. The police also briefly cordoned much of the surrounding neighborhood and stopped vehicles near the embassy as part of the probe.
Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide, PST Spokesman Martin Bernsen and Official Steps
Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide called the incident “unacceptable” and said he had been in contact with the justice minister and the embassy’s chargé d’affaires, Eric Meyer, as the police and the Norwegian security service (PST) opened a joint investigation. PST spokesman Martin Bernsen confirmed the national threat level remains at three on a five-point scale, a setting that has been in place since November 2024.
Still, investigators have not publicly confirmed a motive; one hypothesis is that the blast could be an act of terrorism, Frode Larsen, head of the joint investigation and intelligence unit, said in a public statement, while adding the authorities must remain open to other causes. For now, law enforcement officials continue to interview witnesses and carry out forensic examinations at the scene.
That said, multiple eyewitness accounts noted a heavy security presence: dogs, armed officers and aerial support were reported overhead, and a group of three friends who were waiting nearby said they passed the street covered in smoke as they left in a taxi. Police later declared the immediate area around the building safe for residents and passersby after several hours of work at the site.
If police confirm the explosion was a terrorist act, the investigation will continue jointly with PST and lead to further security measures and possible criminal charges.
