Porzingis Returns to Warriors – Thunder Lineup After Mystery Illness Break

Saturday at 8: 00 p. m. ET, Kristaps Porzingis returned to the Warriors’ lineup in the game against the Oklahoma City Thunder, marking his first confirmed appearance since a recent absence caused by a mystery illness. The return matters now because Porzingis’ availability has been intermittent this season and the team inserted him back into the rotation.

Porzingis’ brief return and season production

This was Porzingis’ second appearance with the Warriors since the team acquired him on Feb. 5. He has appeared in just 18 games overall this season, averaging 16. 8 points, 4. 9 rebounds and 2. 6 assists. In an earlier outing with Golden State he posted 12 points and a rebound in 17 minutes of action.

Warriors – Thunder appearance is second outing since Feb. 5 trade

Porzingis entered off the bench in the first quarter for the Warriors against the Thunder, returning to live game action after a recent stretch away from the court. His official debut with Golden State came on Feb. 19 when he played 9 minutes, 48 seconds; the Warriors outscored opponents by 15 points during that span. Gary Payton II also returned to Golden State in the same game, coming back after missing two games with an ankle injury.

Porzingis’ health saga, diagnosis and prolonged absences

Porzingis has struggled with an ongoing health issue that traces to a viral illness and led to a medical diagnosis last year by Celtics doctors of postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS). He has sat out 110 games combined the past 2½ seasons. After a strong early showing in a matchup with the Denver Nuggets he later woke up sick in his team-provided San Francisco hotel room and called training staff, forcing him to miss that game; he practiced a week later and was upgraded to questionable before being ruled out again on a Saturday afternoon, extending an absence to six consecutive games.

Three different pieces of the timeline underline the uncertainty around his availability: the Feb. 5 acquisition, the Feb. 19 debut, and the string of missed games tied to the mystery illness and POTS diagnosis.

Still, Porzingis has shown flashes when healthy—stretch shooting and rim protection that teams value—but availability remains the central issue for his season and his fit with the Warriors.

Porzingis got on the court yesterday and is supposed to get a workout in tonight in Houston; there is no update on a specific return date, but he is reported to be feeling better. More details are expected tonight ET.
