IU Basketball: Key Insights from Loss at Ohio State

IU Basketball faced a disappointing end to its regular season with a 91-78 loss against Ohio State at Value City Arena. This marked their fifth defeat in six games, emphasizing ongoing challenges within the team’s performance.

IU Basketball: Defensive Struggles Highlighted

Indiana’s defense continued to be a significant concern. After a brief improvement against Minnesota, the Hoosiers allowed 91 points to Ohio State, the second-highest total the Buckeyes scored in a Big Ten game this season. Indiana’s defense allowed an alarming 1.34 points per possession, highlighting a chronic issue throughout the season.

Over the course of the 20-game Big Ten season, Indiana’s defense allowed an average of 1.154 points per possession. This statistic ranks them 14th in the conference, putting them only ahead of the bottom-tier teams: Northwestern, Rutgers, Maryland, and Penn State.

Free-Throw Issues Persist

One of the critical aspects of Indiana’s defensive struggle was its inability to defend without fouling. Ohio State capitalized on this, achieving a free-throw rate of 51 percent. This is the highest rate Indiana has allowed since facing USC earlier in February. Notably, Indiana has suffered losses in all seven games this season where they permitted free-throw rates over 50 percent.

In total, Indiana ranks last in the Big Ten for opponent free-throw rate at 37.5 percent.

Lamar Wilkerson Shines Despite Loss

Amid the challenges, there were standout performances, particularly from Lamar Wilkerson. Even though his shooting efficiency was not at its peak, Wilkerson scored 18 points, surpassing Jimmy Rayl and Don Schlundt to set a new program record for the most single-season points in Big Ten play with 464 points, averaging 23.2 points over 20 games. He also reached a milestone of 103 made 3-pointers this season, needing just four more to tie the record for the program.

Bench Production Lacking

Another issue for Indiana has been inconsistent bench performance. In a game where Reed Bailey stepped up with 12 points and five rebounds, the other two backup guards, Jasai Miles and Tayton Conerway, played a total of 20 minutes without attempting a shot. Conerway’s decline in production has been notable since an injury sidelined him earlier in the season, limiting his offensive contributions significantly.

Shooting Discrepancies

For Indiana to secure a win against Ohio State, effective perimeter defense and accurate shooting were essential. However, the Hoosiers struggled, shooting only 5-for-18 from beyond the arc. This poor performance marks just the fourth instance this season where they made five or fewer 3-pointers in a game. In contrast, Ohio State thrived from distance, hitting 11 of 24 attempts, showcasing their scoring ability.

As the regular season concludes, Indiana will need to address these deficiencies as they prepare for future challenges.
