Zion Stanford Departs Wildcats, Sources Confirm

Vilanova forward Zion Stanford has parted ways with the Wildcats, as confirmed by sources to The Inquirer. This decision comes after a series of struggles with injuries and falling out of favor with head coach Kevin Willard.

Zion Stanford’s Journey at Villanova

Stanford, a junior transfer from Temple, previously played at West Catholic. His last appearance was in a game against Seton Hall on February 4, where he played only two minutes. He has missed multiple games due to injury, including an ankle issue and knee soreness.

Injury Report and Playing Time

  • Stanford averaged 1.3 points in 5.1 minutes per game this season.
  • He played in 10 games, making up 32.25% of Villanova’s total of 31 regular-season games.
  • To qualify for a medical redshirt, a player must participate in less than 30% of their team’s games.

A day after practicing with his teammates, Stanford did not travel with them to Chicago for a game against DePaul. He was again absent from the Saturday season finale against Xavier.

Mutual Decision to Depart

Stanford’s agent, Ken Jackson of Sky Limit Sports, stated, “Zion and the program mutually agreed that he’ll step away from the team for the remainder of the season while focusing on his health.” Earlier in the week, Jackson indicated that Stanford was awaiting clearance to return from injury. However, Villanova has not listed him as injured in their recent player availability reports.

Impact on Villanova’s Roster

Stanford becomes the second player to leave the Wildcats this season. Senior forward Tafara Gapare departed in December after appearing in nine games. Gapare expressed on social media that he did not choose to leave, but stepped away for a short period for his mental health.

With both players no longer on the roster, Villanova’s frontcourt depth is significantly compromised. The team will have to navigate the remainder of the season with a reduced rotation, following the departure of Zion Stanford.

Conclusion

The loss of Stanford, combined with Gapare’s exit, places additional pressure on the remaining players as the Wildcats aim to finish the season strong. Villanova will now look to adapt to their new circumstances while addressing the challenges ahead.
