Two Arrested After Suspicious Devices Found Near NYC Mayor’s Residence
Two men have been arrested in connection with suspicious devices discovered near the residence of New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani. The incident occurred on March 7 during a counterprotest against an anti-Islam rally organized by a far-right group.
Details of the Incident
The anti-Islam rally was led by Jake Lang, a 30-year-old individual who gained notoriety after being pardoned for his involvement in the January 6 Capitol riots. The gathering, titled “Stop the Islamic Takeover of New York City,” attracted approximately 20 participants and took place near Gracie Mansion, the mayor’s official residence.
Police were present for the demonstration, which commenced around 11 a.m. Concurrently, a counterprotest called “Run the Nazis out of New York City” drew around 125 people. Authorities separated the two factions to maintain order.
Escalation of Hostilities
Tensions escalated just before noon, leading to a series of confrontations. At 12:15 p.m., police arrested an individual from Lang’s group accused of using pepper spray on counterprotesters. Shortly thereafter, at 12:38 p.m., Emir Balat, an 18-year-old counterprotester, ignited and threw a device toward Lang’s group. The device landed in a crosswalk and extinguished before reaching the officers.
Subsequently, Balat retrieved another device from 19-year-old Ibrahim Nikk. Both were taken into custody by the NYPD, although no formal charges have been filed against them as of yet.
Nature of the Devices
The devices, both smaller than a football, were collected by the NYPD bomb squad. Preliminary examinations revealed that they were jars wrapped in black tape containing nuts, bolts, and screws. They included hobby fuses that could potentially be lit. However, it remains unclear whether the devices were capable of detonation or were merely hoaxes.
Further investigations are underway to determine the true nature of these devices. Local police are conducting thorough searches to identify any additional potential threats. Fortunately, there were no reported injuries or property damage during the events.
Context of the Event
This incident took place during Ramadan, a significant month in the Islamic calendar. While there is no evidence linking the devices or the rally to ongoing geopolitical issues, authorities continue to explore all avenues of investigation.
In a statement, a City Hall spokesman confirmed that both Mayor Mamdani and First Lady Rama Duwaji were safe during the disturbances. The spokesman described Lang’s rally as “despicable and Islamophobic.”
Jake Lang is also notable for his current candidacy in the Republican primary for a U.S. Senate seat in Florida. He was previously pardoned by former President Donald Trump, alongside nearly 1,600 others involved in the January 6 Capitol insurrection.
This situation continues to evolve, with updates expected as investigations proceed.
