Brian McGinnis and Sen. Tim Sheehy: Marine's Arm Broken at Senate Hearing in Viral Confrontation
One of the most explosive moments of the week on Capitol Hill has nothing to do with legislation. Marine Corps veteran Brian McGinnis had his arm broken during a physical removal from a Senate Armed Services subcommittee hearing Wednesday, March 4 — with Republican Senator Tim Sheehy of Montana directly involved in the ejection.
What Happened: Brian McGinnis Protests, Gets Physically Removed
Brian C. McGinnis, a Marine Corps veteran and Green Party candidate for U.S. Senate in North Carolina, was forcibly removed from a Senate Armed Services Committee hearing on March 4, 2026, after interrupting proceedings with a protest over U.S. policy in the Middle East. During the hearing, McGinnis stood and began shouting objections to what he characterized as the U.S. movement toward war with Iran in support of Israel. Video from inside the chamber shows Capitol Police moving quickly to restrain and escort him out after he refused to stop speaking.
McGinnis exclaimed at one point: "America does not want to send its sons and daughters to war for Israel." Members of the Capitol Police attempted to remove McGinnis — who was wearing a military uniform — from the hearing room.
Senator Sheehy Leaves His Seat and Joins the Removal
Sen. Tim Sheehy, a former Navy SEAL lieutenant elected to the Senate with Trump's backing, left the dais and joined the officers in hauling McGinnis toward the exit. Footage showed Sheehy had grabbed McGinnis by the leg before the arm broke.
McGinnis had his hand stuck in the door frame, with his arm hooked around the adjacent open door panel as several police tried to force him out of the room. Sheehy lifted up McGinnis's leg as police officers grabbed his torso and tugged. As Sheehy moved to dislodge the protester's hand and tug on his arm, McGinnis's forearm appeared to snap in half. There was a loud cracking sound, and bystanders began to yell at the police to stop.
A voice could be heard shouting in the room: "A U.S. senator just broke the hand of a Marine."
Capitol Police Statement vs. McGinnis Campaign Statement
Capitol Police said McGinnis "got his own arm stuck in a door to resist our officers and force his way back into the hearing room," and that three police officers were treated for injuries by local emergency medical services. McGinnis faces three counts of assault on a police officer, three counts of resisting arrest, and one count of crowding, obstructing, and incommoding for the unlawful demonstration.
His campaign manager Mark Elbourno rejected the assault claim entirely, telling reporters: "He wasn't assaulting anybody. He just wanted to be heard, speaking loud and clear. He was assaulted, actually. They broke his arm."
Who Is Brian McGinnis?
McGinnis is a Marine Corps veteran, a father of four, and a professional firefighter from North Carolina running for the U.S. Senate as a Green Party candidate. On Thursday, McGinnis confirmed his arm — not his hand — had been broken. He posted on X: "And for the record, I've been running long before this, and yes even after breaking my arm standing up for what I believe in. It's only made me more determined. Anger is real, and so is resolve."
Despite the seven charges against him, McGinnis vowed to stay in the North Carolina Senate race.
Who Is Senator Tim Sheehy?
Sheehy, 40, is a former Navy SEAL who served in Afghanistan and Iraq before being elected to the Senate from Montana. He defended his involvement on X, writing: "Capitol Police were attempting to remove an unhinged protestor from the Armed Services hearing. He was fighting back. I decided to help out and deescalate the situation. This gentleman came to the Capitol looking for a confrontation, and he got one."
The reaction was swift. AP reporter Farnoush Amiri wrote: "I've been in countless congressional hearings where protesters have been removed by Capitol Police, almost always peacefully. I have never seen a senator or lawmaker get involved like this and get physical with the protester."
