Formula 1's 2026 season has arrived and it began with a shock at Albert Park. George Russell dominated qualifying to claim pole position for the season-opening Australian Grand Prix, while reigning world champion Max Verstappen suffered one of the most embarrassing exits in recent F1 history — crashing out in Q1 on his very first flying lap.

George Russell Dominates — Mercedes' New Era Begins in Style

As Russell joined the action — the Mercedes driver having topped FP3 earlier in the day — he eclipsed Bortoleto's time by a colossal six-tenths, becoming the first driver to break into the 1m 19s bracket to solidify his status as one of the favourites for pole. His stunning final lap of 1m 18.518s established a major advantage over the rest of the field.

Hadjar, the nearest non-Mercedes car, was more than three-quarters of a second off pole position pace. Mercedes' dominance in the new 2026 technical regulations is immediately alarming for their rivals.

Verstappen Crashes Out in Q1 — Starts from the Back

Verstappen suffered a shock exit in Q1 after crashing into the barrier. He hit the brakes at Turn 1 and locked the rear axle, sending him rattling over the gravel before ending up in the barrier to bring his first qualifying of 2026 to an unexpectedly premature end.

Verstappen will start the grand prix from the back of the grid, joining Carlos Sainz and Lance Stroll who both failed to emerge from the garage. Aston Martin endured a horror Saturday, with Fernando Alonso also suffering a double Q1 exit alongside Stroll.

Kimi Antonelli Under Investigation

Antonelli finished second to complete an all-Mercedes front row, but the Italian driver was placed under investigation after his team released his car in an unsafe condition during Q3 — a cooling fan was still attached to the car, with one landing on track and being smashed to pieces by Lando Norris' McLaren. A penalty could yet shuffle the grid.
