Saks Fifth Avenue Closes Tysons Galleria Store After 38 Years

Saks Fifth Avenue will soon close its location at the Tysons Galleria, marking the end of an era after 38 years. This closure is part of a larger restructuring effort by Saks Global, which has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

Saks Fifth Avenue in Tysons Galleria: Key Details

Opened in 1988, the Saks Fifth Avenue store was one of the original anchor tenants at Tysons Galleria. It has served customers alongside Neiman Marcus and Macy’s, the latter of which shuttered its doors in 2019.

The decision to close the Tysons location was announced by Saks Global and is expected to take effect by the end of May.

Reasons for the Closure

A representative from Saks Global confirmed that the closures are a strategic move to refine the operational footprint of the retailer. The decision involves assessing each store’s performance and aligning with customer preferences.

Current Statistics and Future Plans

  • 12 Saks Fifth Avenue stores will permanently close.
  • Three Neiman Marcus locations will also shut down.
  • The closures follow an earlier announcement about eight Saks Fifth Avenue and one Neiman Marcus location closing.
  • By spring, a total of 24 department stores are slated for closure, leaving 13 Saks Fifth Avenue and 32 Neiman Marcus locations.

Impact on Tysons Galleria

The closure of Saks Fifth Avenue adds to the changes at Tysons Galleria. Recent departures include notable restaurants such as The Cheesecake Factory and Maggiano’s.

Brookfield Properties, the mall’s owner, is working to repopulate the shopping center. However, they have not disclosed specific plans for the 41,399-square-foot space formerly occupied by Saks.

Saks Global’s Operational Changes

Saks Global has been actively restructuring since the January bankruptcy filing. The company is negotiating repayment agreements with over 175 suppliers and adjusting inventory strategies. They have resumed shipping for 500 brands, with expectations to handle around $1.3 billion in retail receipts.

Additionally, Saks is winding down many of its Fifth Avenue Club styling suites and limiting the number of Saks Off Fifth locations to 12, which will focus on selling remaining inventory.

Saks Fifth Avenue’s closure at Tysons Galleria reflects broader trends in the retail landscape, as companies navigate economic challenges and shifting consumer preferences.
