Google Messages Rolls Out ‘Tap to Draft’ for Smart Replies

Google Messages is introducing an innovative feature called “Tap to Draft,” designed to enhance user experience by minimizing accidental Smart Replies. This new behavior allows users to edit their responses before sending them, offering a vital step to ensure better communication.

Details on Tap to Draft Feature

The “Tap to Draft” option can be accessed through Messages Settings > Suggestions. Users will find a new preference listed under Smart Reply settings:

  • Tap to Send: Instantly sends a message upon tapping Smart Replies.
  • Tap to Draft: Places the Smart Reply suggestion in the text field for further editing.

The current default setting remains “Tap to Send.” However, “Tap to Draft” provides a useful alternative, allowing modifications before sending messages.

This feature appears in the beta version 20260303_00_RC00 of Google Messages. As of now, it has not yet reached the stable version for all users.
