Andy Dick Opens Up About Overdose, Says Scan Showed 'Five to Seven' Brain Lesions

On the March 3 podcast episode, Andy Dick recalled waking in an ambulance after being found unresponsive, saying his condition at the scene was "purple, not breathing. " He said he was revived on the sidewalk with Narcan and that "there were no bright lights" when he came to in the ambulance. He told the host he remembers little of the moments before or after the December 9 incident.

Brain scan, memory loss and differing descriptions of damage

Doctors performed a scan of his head that Dick described as showing "about five to seven lesions, " a finding he directly attributed to his drinking. In other remarks he used the word "holes" instead of "lesions, " and he acknowledged that his memory has taken a hit since the overdose. He told the host that he only remembers "waking up in the ambulance, " and that the scan findings now affect his recall.

Sober living, testing and family reasons for staying clean

Now 60 and living in a sober living facility, andy dick said he is completely sober: "I don't do anything except coffee, " he said on the podcast. He described being drug tested regularly, added that the community where he lives does not allow substances, and said he is attending treatment. He spoke about his three children and two grandchildren, with a third grandchild on the way, and told the host that protecting his family is part of why he is trying to stay sober.

The host urged tougher scrutiny of the people around him, saying those who kept cameras rolling while Dick was incapacitated had failed him. The host told Dick plainly, "You don't have a lot of chances left, " and Dick nodded in agreement: "You're right. You don't. "

Dick also spoke candidly about boredom and the COVID lockdowns as triggers for his substance use, saying he often turned to alcohol and marijuana when he had nowhere to go and nothing to fill the hours. He told the host he gets bored easily and that boredom has historically led him back to drugs and alcohol.

He remains in the sober living facility, is attending treatment and is being drug tested regularly as part of his recovery plan.
