Astros Secure Minor League Deal with Christian Vazquez
The Houston Astros have signed catcher Christian Vazquez to a minor league contract. The agreement includes an invitation for Vazquez to participate in the team’s Spring Training camp. Vazquez, who is represented by MDR Sports Management, is currently playing for Puerto Rico in the World Baseball Classic.
Vazquez’s Previous Tenure with the Astros
This will mark Vazquez’s second time wearing an Astros uniform. He was initially acquired during the 2022 trade deadline. During his brief stint that season, he had a batting average of .250, with a .278 on-base percentage and a .308 slugging percentage over 108 plate appearances. In the postseason, his numbers were .235/.316/.235 over 19 plate appearances. Nevertheless, he was part of the World Series championship team, contributing to the Astros’ memorable combined no-hitter in Game 4 of the Series.
Challenges at Minnesota
Following his time with the Astros, Vazquez signed a three-year contract worth $30 million with the Minnesota Twins. Unfortunately, his performance did not improve as he managed only a .215 batting average over his 884 plate appearances there. Despite his reputation as a strong defensive catcher, his offensive statistics resulted in a backup role behind Ryan Jeffers.
Trade Rumors and Market Interest
Vazquez’s struggles, coupled with his substantial salary, made him a difficult player to trade, despite being linked to various rumors in recent years. Although the Twins traded numerous veterans before the last year’s deadline, Vazquez remained with the team throughout his contract.
Joining the Astros Again
Interest in Vazquez’s free agency was minimal, with only sporadic reports connecting him back to the Astros. Eventually, the two sides reached an agreement, allowing Vazquez to compete for the backup catcher position behind starter Yainer Diaz. He will be in competition with Cesar Salazar, who has limited major league experience, as well as Carlos Perez, who has not played in the majors since 2023.
Defensive Skills
Even though Vazquez’s hitting may not have been stellar, he is highly regarded for his defensive capabilities. In 2025, he recorded +5 Defensive Runs Saved over 519 innings behind the plate. Statcast rated his overall catching performance neutral, but his blocking and throwing skills were deemed above average, with 14 successful throws out of 56 opportunities to catch base stealers.
Outlook for Spring Training
With limited time before Spring Training due to his World Baseball Classic commitments, it remains to be seen how Vazquez will perform. Ultimately, the Astros’ decision to sign him indicates a lack of confidence in their current backup catching options without committing significant resources. The minor league deal offers the team a chance to evaluate his fit as Diaz’s understudy.
