New York Heartwoods Creatively Reuses Reclaimed Trees
Megan Offner, founder of New York Heartwoods, is transforming the lives of trees that are cut down for construction. Located in Kingston, N.Y., her initiative creatively reuses reclaimed trees to craft sustainable wood products. On a cold December morning, she reflected on the unfortunate decision to cut down a cluster of trees for a new townhouse development.
These trees, some standing at 80 feet tall, have weathered many storms over nearly 75 years. Instead of going to waste, the trees will be repurposed into 8,000 linear feet of sustainable wood products for the new apartments. This includes baseboard moldings, built-in shelves, and window trims.
Innovative Tree Reclamation
Developer Coby Lefkowitz acknowledges that upcycling these trees is costlier than purchasing commercial lumber, typically 25% more expensive. However, he aims to weave the story of these trees into the marketing narrative of the development. “It’s already worth it,” he stated, demonstrating a shift toward sustainability.
Offner’s work emphasizes meaningful alternatives to traditional lumber. By using local resources, she collaborates with a network of arborists and sawmill operators in New York’s Hudson Valley. This not only minimizes transportation emissions but also supports small businesses as larger mills close down.
Sustainability as a Priority
At a time when forest fragility has emerged as a pressing concern, Offner’s reclamation efforts retain carbon stored in the trees throughout their lives. Her mission centers around creating valuable items from downed or purposely felled trees. This approach also deters the accidental waste that arises from tree removal.

For example, she crafted custom pieces for the artist Ruth Freeman after Freeman cleared trees for her new house. “It was such a fun time,” Freeman noted, cherishing the unique pieces that Offner designed.
A Personal Journey
Offner’s passion for trees was cultivated during her childhood in Montana. Noting the emotional impact of clear-cutting forests on her travels, she grew determined to find sustainable uses for wood. Her career path took her from the fashion world in New York City as a set designer to creating meaningful wooden goods.
A pivotal moment came in 2010 when she attended a forestry management workshop exploring sustainability practices. This knowledge helped shape her business model as she sought to salvage trees, especially after Hurricane Irene felled many in New York.
Creative Collaborations
Today, Offner manages numerous projects, generating around $130,000 annually. She collaborates with various clients, including sportswear entrepreneur James Bond, who sought her expertise for a historical property in Ulster County. Offner assessed the trees on Bond’s property and developed a comprehensive plan to turn them into shiplap wall paneling.
In another project, architect Michael K. Chen salvaged a 1915 Norway maple. Despite its condition, Offner was able to create usable slabs for a kitchen island and dining banquette. “It was an act of care,” Chen remarked, highlighting the dedication to honoring the tree’s legacy.
Every piece crafted by New York Heartwoods reflects a commitment to sustainability. Offner believes transforming trees into usable products is a heartfelt way to celebrate their former lives, stating, “If you can reincarnate trees into things that one can continue to appreciate, that creativity heals some of the heartbreak.”
