Kalshi Faces Lawsuit Over Removal of Iran Leader Prediction Market

A recent class-action lawsuit has been filed against the prediction market platform Kalshi for allegedly failing to fulfill a $54 million payout. This payment was owed to bettors who wagered that Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei would step down before March 1, 2024. The suit comes in the wake of Khamenei’s death during U.S.-Israeli military strikes that resulted in numerous casualties.

Details of the Lawsuit

The lawsuit, lodged in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California, claims that Kalshi did not activate a “death carveout” provision until after Khamenei’s death. The plaintiffs argue this was a deliberate tactic by the company to avoid paying out winnings from the “Khamenei Market.”

According to the suit, the circumstances surrounding Khamenei’s leadership indicated that his departure could likely result from his death. Many users believed this possibility was understood by Kalshi as well:

  • “With an American naval armada amassed on Iran’s doorstep, military conflict was widely anticipated,” the lawsuit asserted.
  • The language around what constituted Khamenei’s departure was described as “clear and unambiguous.”

Kalshi’s Defense

In response to the allegations, a Kalshi spokesperson stated that the company’s rules remained unchanged and were apparent from the outset. They emphasized that Kalshi took precautions to prevent trading based on death outcomes:

  • Kalshi claimed to have reimbursed all fees and net losses, amounting to millions, to ensure no user incurred a loss.

Impact of Prediction Markets

Prediction markets like Kalshi have significantly grown in popularity. These platforms enable users to bet on various global events, from sports to political outcomes. The resurgence gained momentum during the 2024 U.S. elections, showcasing how accurately these markets can forecast events compared to traditional polling methods.

The costs to place a bet on these markets typically range from zero to 100 cents, with payouts occurring once an outcome is confirmed.
