Anthropic Graph Reveals Jobs Most Threatened by AI Replacement
Anthropic economists have examined the potential impact of AI on various occupations. Their findings reveal which jobs are most susceptible to replacement by artificial intelligence technologies.
A New Measure of AI Displacement Risk
Maxim Massenkoff and Peter McCrory developed a metric known as “observed exposure.” This measure compares the tasks large language models (LLMs) can theoretically perform with the actual tasks required in various jobs. Their analysis indicates that real-world usage is not yet reflecting the theoretical capabilities of AI.
Jobs Most Threatened by AI Replacement
The study identified five professions that are currently the most vulnerable to AI disruption:
- Computer Programmers
- Customer Service Representatives
- Data Entry Keyers
- Medical Record Specialists
- Market Research Analysts and Marketing Specialists
While these occupations demonstrate significant exposure to AI, there hasn’t yet been a marked increase in unemployment rates among workers in these fields.
Hiring Trends and Economic Implications
Massenkoff and McCrory noted a slowdown in hiring younger workers within these professions. Their findings highlight the urgent need for real-time economic monitoring to identify vulnerable jobs before widespread displacement occurs.
Limitations of AI Technology
The economists emphasized that many tasks, including complex duties like making legal arguments in court, remain beyond AI’s capabilities. Certain fields, such as agriculture and law, are particularly resistant to automation.
Industry Perspectives on Job Displacement
Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic, has raised alarms regarding potential job loss due to AI advancements. He claimed that up to half of entry-level white-collar positions could be replaced within the next one to five years, contradicting some industry leaders like OpenAI’s Sam Altman.
Software Engineering and Future Job Trends
As AI technologies evolve, some experts predict that software engineering roles may diminish. Boris Cherny, creator of Claude Code, anticipates the role of software engineer may begin to vanish by 2026.
Least Exposed Professions
Interestingly, the study also identified occupations with lower exposure to AI threats, including:
- Cooks
- Motorcycle Mechanics
- Lifeguards
- Bartenders
- Dishwashers
History of AI Predictions
The historical accuracy of AI job displacement predictions varies significantly. Geoffrey Hinton, a prominent AI researcher, once predicted the obsolescence of radiologists due to AI by 2021. However, a decade later, the demand for radiologists remains strong.
Demographic Insights on Job Exposure
The Anthropic economists also observed demographic trends among workers in high-risk professions. Those most affected tend to be older, more educated, and higher-paid individuals. This information underscores the unequal impact of technological advances on the workforce.
