60% of Australians Under 40 Unaware of This Key Fact

The issue of perimenopause and menopause awareness has emerged as a significant concern in Australia. A recent survey reveals that 60% of Australians under 40 are unaware of crucial facts related to these stages of life.

Understanding the Awareness Gap

In December, a nationwide survey conducted by news.com.au underscored a growing crisis surrounding women’s health. The survey gathered insights from over 2,200 participants, showing alarming trends in knowledge about perimenopause and menopause.

  • 37% of respondents reported having “little or no knowledge” about these topics.
  • Among respondents under 40, this lack of awareness surged to 62%.
  • Conversely, 80% of female respondents could identify at least three symptoms of perimenopause.
  • Only 50% of male respondents showed similar recognition.

The Challenges Women Face

Women seeking medical help face numerous obstacles. Many report feeling dismissed by healthcare providers. It often takes up to five years for some women to receive the support they need.

According to survey results, 28.7% of women indicated that inadequate GP training challenges their access to treatment. Dr. Sarah Cavanagh, Chief Medical Officer at Instant Scripts, emphasized that women’s health education in medical schools has often been lacking.

Impact on Wellbeing and Employment

Reports indicate that menopause can lead to profound emotional and financial burdens. A 2024 Senate Inquiry noted that menopause costs Australian women approximately $15.2 billion annually due to lost income and superannuation from early retirement.

This financial strain begins even before reaching a healthcare provider, as women often face high costs for GP visits. The inquiry revealed that many women feel compelled to abandon treatment due to the financial burden of repetitive consultations.

Privacy and Stigma

Even as awareness grows, a culture of silence surrounds menopause. More than half of women currently experiencing perimenopause or menopause choose to keep their experiences private. This secrecy may perpetuate misinformation and prevent dialogue.

Initiating National Conversations

In partnership with Priceline Pharmacy, there is a call to instigate a national conversation about menopause and perimenopause. The aim is to enhance education for healthcare professionals and ensure all Australians understand the symptoms and available treatments.

With ongoing support, we can strive for a future where no woman suffers in silence during these crucial transitions. Raising awareness is essential for women’s health and wellness across Australia.
