Colton Parayko Retains Trade Protection Ahead of NHL Deadline
Colton Parayko, the St. Louis Blues defenseman, has confirmed he will not waive his no-trade protection before the NHL trade deadline. This decision comes despite previous speculation regarding his potential movement to a team of his choice.
Trade Speculation and Current Season Performance
The 32-year-old Parayko has been a foundational player for the Blues for over a decade. Recently, he was involved in trade talks with the Buffalo Sabres, which reportedly included a substantial return, such as top prospect Radim Mrtka and a first-round pick. This interest in Parayko persists even as he experiences a challenging season offensively.
Last season, Parayko achieved career highs with 16 goals and 36 points. However, this year, he has struggled, recording just one goal and 13 assists in 58 games. Additionally, he is currently dealing with back spasms, affecting his on-ice performance. Nevertheless, he continues to average over 22 minutes of play per game against challenging opponents.
Future Prospects and Contractual Considerations
Parayko has four years remaining on his contract, which carries an annual cap hit of $6.5 million. His no-trade clause may limit immediate moves, but there remains a possibility that he could consider a trade in the offseason depending on the circumstances. This flexibility could increase his market value as teams seek impactful defenders.
Implications for St. Louis Blues
With Parayko’s trade protection status confirmed, attention may shift towards teammate Justin Faulk. Faulk, the 33-year-old defenseman, does not have full trade protection and has a 15-team no-trade list. He is also signed through next season, making him a viable option for teams interested in strengthening their defensive lineup.
Blues General Manager Doug Armstrong may now refocus his efforts on securing a favorable deal for Faulk. Given the demand for quality defenders, this strategy could maximize the potential return for the Blues while addressing their current roster needs.
