Canadiens Trade Rumors: Arber Emerges as Key Factor in Flames Deal
The NHL trade deadline is rapidly approaching, and trade rumors are intensifying. Among the latest speculation is the Montreal Canadiens defenseman, Arber Xhekaj, who has drawn interest from the Calgary Flames. This development was recently reported by Herb Zurkowsky of the Montreal Gazette.
Canadiens and Flames: A Potential Trade
The Canadiens may be considering different options in return for Xhekaj, who is 25 years old. One player often mentioned in connection with the Flames is Nazem Kadri. However, interest in Kadri from the Canadiens has significantly decreased since the beginning of the season.
Defensive Options from the Flames
A more plausible scenario involves the Canadiens seeking to acquire one of the Flames’ right-handed defensemen: Mackenzie Weegar or Zach Whitecloud. Historically, the Canadiens have traded from a position of excess to fill specific needs on their roster.
- Mackenzie Weegar: At 32 years old, Weegar is in the third year of an eight-year contract with an average annual value (AAV) of $6.25 million. His experience could be valuable, but the Canadiens would need the Flames to retain some salary for negotiations to advance.
- Zach Whitecloud: Whitecloud, on the other hand, is 26 years old, entering year four of a six-year deal with an AAV of $2.75 million. His contract makes him a more favorable acquisition.
Challenges of a Hypothetical Trade
One of the significant obstacles for the Canadiens in making a move is the cost. While trading Xhekaj could serve as a starting point, the Flames would likely require a high-round draft pick or a tier-A prospect in return for Whitecloud.
The Canadiens’ management has demonstrated a cautious approach to trades, only proceeding when the terms are optimal. Fans are now left speculating whether Xhekaj, often referred to as “The Sheriff,” will remain with the team or head to Calgary.
