A civilian Bell 505 helicopter that departed from manila made an emergency landing east of the Philippine capital, killing two of the five people onboard and injuring the three others. Authorities say the cause of the forced landing is unclear and an investigation is underway.

Manila departure and emergency landing

The helicopter took off from Manila and was enroute to Quezon province when it made a forced landing in a grassy clearing near a village east of the capital. The landing occurred about 50 meters (164 feet) from the nearest cluster of houses in a village in Pililla town in Rizal province. Aviation officials noted the landing happened in clear weather; what caused the forced landing has not been confirmed publicly.

Casualties and survivors

Of the five people aboard, one person died on impact and another later died in a hospital, leaving three survivors who were also taken to hospital with injuries, including the pilot. Local two of those onboard were foreigners, and one of the deceased was among them. Pililla town leadership said the survivors remained in shock and that their recovery was the immediate priority. An investigation into the incident is under way.

Farm Fresh pays tribute to Jacob Mathan

Farm Fresh leadership and colleagues have publicly mourned the loss of Jacob Mathan, who was on the helicopter and did not survive. A company executive described receiving a call from the Malaysian Embassy in the Philippines on the morning of 3 March asking for Jacob's contact details; the executive had seen Jacob days earlier and initially assumed the embassy wanted to discuss a land project. About an hour after that call, the executive learned the helicopter had crashed and later received confirmation from the group's managing director that Jacob had not survived.

Colleagues remembered Jacob as a committed staff member who had been trained extensively and had risen to significant responsibility, including managing interactions with government veterinary services, breeders, and a farm team of 400 people. A senior company official wrote that Jacob had been entrusted with major duties and might have been considered for even higher leadership if further developed. Family members and coworkers were described as grieving while handling arrangements and viewing images related to the accident.

Investigation and immediate outlook

Aviation authorities and local officials have said an investigation is ongoing but have not released a cause. With key details not publicly confirmed, authorities are focusing on the medical care and recovery of the injured and on completing the investigation into what led to the forced landing. Further findings and any official determinations about the sequence of events are expected as investigators review the helicopter and interview survivors when they are able to provide statements.
