Piastri Faces Devastating Setback at Australian Grand Prix
Oscar Piastri faced an unfortunate setback at the Australian Grand Prix, failing to complete even a single lap at Albert Park. The Australian driver, representing McLaren, was eager to impress his home crowd and begin the 2026 season with a strong showing.
Piastri’s McLaren Woes
Right from the start, Piastri’s McLaren encountered significant issues. He reported to his pit crew, “Ah I’ve got no power. I’m idling but I’ve got no throttle.” After a brief respite, he regained power but continued to struggle. “There is something that is still not right, the power delivery,” he added.

McLaren’s Additional Challenges
It wasn’t only Piastri who faced mechanical difficulties. Teammate and reigning world champion Lando Norris also reported issues, specifically with his gearbox. “Downshifts are shocking. All shifts. Something doesn’t feel right,” he noted. Following these complications, McLaren opted to pit Norris to prevent further damage and to make necessary adjustments before the second practice session.
Aston Martin’s Serious Concerns
While McLaren dealt with performance issues, Aston Martin faced a critical safety concern. Team principal Adrian Newey revealed that their cars would not participate in the Australian Grand Prix due to extreme vibrations that posed a risk for their drivers. “The vibration is transmitted ultimately into the driver’s fingers,” he explained.
- Driver Concerns:
- Fernando Alonso: Limited to 25 consecutive laps.
- Lance Stroll: Limited to 15 consecutive laps.
Newey emphasized the safety implications, as the vibrations could lead to permanent nerve damage. He stated, “We are going to have to be very heavily restricted on how many laps we do in the race until we get on top of the source of the vibration.”
With such setbacks affecting both McLaren and Aston Martin, the opening race of the 2026 season is proving to be exceptionally challenging for these teams.
