Granville Street in Vancouver Goes Pedestrian-Only for FIFA World Cup

A significant section of Granville Street in downtown Vancouver is set to become pedestrian-only for the FIFA Men’s World Cup this summer. This initiative aims to enhance the experience for both residents and numerous soccer fans visiting the city.

Details of the Granville Street Closure

The closure will stretch across five blocks, from West Georgia Street to Davie Street, initiating on June 11 and continuing until July 20. During this time, the area will feature live music, expanded outdoor patios, art installations, and various family-friendly activities.

Traffic and Accessibility Changes

  • Major cross streets including Robson, Smithe, Nelson, and Helmcken will remain open to traffic.
  • Transit buses will be redirected to Seymour and Howe streets with the establishment of 24/7 bus lanes for the duration of the event.

Community and Business Impact

According to Jane Talbot, president and CEO of the Downtown Vancouver Business Improvement Association, this initiative will foster a gathering place for people to celebrate while benefiting local businesses. Mayor Ken Sim emphasized the importance of inclusivity, stating that the Granville Street Pedestrian Zone will allow both residents and visitors to enjoy the festivities.

World Cup Events and Attendance

Vancouver’s B.C. Place will host seven matches in the FIFA Men’s World Cup, starting with a game between Australia and a yet-to-be-determined opponent on June 13. The city anticipates welcoming over 350,000 visitors during the match days.

Safety Measures

To ensure safety around the pedestrian zone, Vancouver officials will collaborate with the Vancouver Police Department and Vancouver Fire Rescue Services. Temporary road closures will be implemented, with some areas designated as local traffic only for residents accessing properties.

This initiative on Granville Street not only promotes community engagement but also showcases the hospitality of Vancouver to international visitors during a historic sporting event.
