Nancy Guthrie Update Today: FBI Says Case Is "Red Hot" as Investigation Enters Week Five
Nancy Guthrie Update Today

The search for Nancy Guthrie has now stretched past 33 days, and the pressure on investigators is intensifying. As of March 5, 2026, a retired FBI agent is firing back hard against reports the investigation is going cold — insisting the case is anything but. Here is the latest Nancy Guthrie update today and what the FBI is doing right now.

Nancy Guthrie Update Today: FBI Pushes Back on "Cold Case" Reports

Retired FBI Special Agent Jennifer Coffindaffer told Newsweek the case is "the polar opposite of a cold case," describing it as a "red-hot case with agents, up to 100, and analysts and Pima County Sheriff's officers and other law enforcement working on all the actionable leads."

Coffindaffer took direct aim at media reports suggesting the investigation was stalling, writing that anyone calling Nancy's case cold "has no idea what that term means and has never worked a day of law enforcement in their life."

TMZ's Harvey Levin cited an FBI source who stated that while momentum has been difficult to see publicly, investigators believe it will only take one person to crack the case open — one individual who comes forward and talks.

What the FBI Has on the Suspect Right Now

Coffindaffer identified the doorbell camera footage released by the FBI on February 10 as the single biggest active lead in the investigation, pointing to specific physical features of the suspect — including distinct eyebrows, a mustache, his attire, and a pinky ring — as highly identifiable details that people in his life would almost certainly recognize.

Retired FBI profiler Jim Clemente said the suspect appeared to be "fairly sophisticated" in planning the abduction until the doorbell camera footage revealed he had not anticipated being recorded. Clemente said the suspect likely exposed a tattoo and, by failing to cover his mouth, probably left DNA at the scene.

Clemente assessed the suspect is "probably in his 30s or 40s" and said the individual "definitely exhibited pre- and post-offense behavior that people around him can see."

DNA Evidence and Key Investigative Leads

DNA from a pair of gloves found near Nancy Guthrie's Tucson home was tested against CODIS — the FBI's national criminal database — and returned no match. Authorities said the gloves appeared consistent with those worn by the masked individual seen on the surveillance footage.

Coffindaffer said DNA recovered from inside the house remains a critical lead, noting it could break the case if the sample is strong enough to generate a hit through investigative genetic genealogy profiling.

Newly released Ring camera footage from a neighbor also showed a dozen vehicles passing through the Catalina Foothills area around 2:30 a.m. on February 1 — roughly the same time Nancy Guthrie's pacemaker last synced with her iPhone.

FBI Takes Command as Local Resources Shift

The Pima County Sheriff's Department has begun scaling back its direct role in the investigation, with the FBI expected to formally lead through a task force structure. Coffindaffer described the U.S. Attorney's Office involvement as a clear signal of command change, calling it "great news" and a sign the case is being elevated.

Investigators recently conducted a final sweep of Nancy Guthrie's Arizona home for up to several hours before returning the property to her family. Up to a dozen agents in unmarked vehicles focused considerable attention on the front porch and walkway where a trail of her blood was previously discovered.

Reward Now Totals Over $1.2 Million

The FBI is offering up to $100,000 for information leading to Nancy Guthrie's recovery or the arrest and conviction of those responsible. The 88-CRIME tipline is offering an additional $102,500. Savannah Guthrie announced the family is separately offering up to $1 million, payable upon her mother's recovery, and confirmed it can be paid in cash.

Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos has stated publicly that he personally believes Nancy Guthrie is still alive. Anyone with information is urged to contact 1-800-CALL-FBI or visit tips.fbi.gov. Nancy Guthrie was 84 years old when she was last seen at her Tucson home on January 31, 2026.
