M25 Traffic and wider Surrey disruption after police safety incident and car meet dispersal order

All four lanes of the M25 were shut this morning between junctions J10 and J9 in an anticlockwise closure that left drivers at a standstill and created lengthy delays on a key orbital route. The m25 traffic disruption, tied to a police "concern for safety" incident that prompted emergency crews to be scrambled shortly after 9am, has prompted ongoing traffic management and travel warnings.

M25 carriageway closed anticlockwise between junctions J10 and J9

Police closed the M25 anticlockwise between junctions J10 and J9, shutting all four lanes. Emergency crews were scrambled to the scene shortly after 9am as the closure left drivers at a standstill for around an hour at 11am. The closure was linked to a "concern for safety" that was resolved at around 11: 40am, and four lanes were reopened, though anti-clockwise restrictions remained in place while traffic management was cleared.

National Highways warnings and expected recovery times for motorists

National Highways warned of severe congestion on the affected stretch, advising motorists to allow extra time for journeys and warning that delays of around 60 minutes remained. Statements put normal conditions returning between 2: 15pm and 3pm, with traffic not expected to clear until after 2pm while the incident was stood down and traffic management was removed.

Surrey dispersal order targets planned car meet at Cobham Services and nearby streets

A dispersal order covering parts of Surrey will run from 16: 00 GMT until 04: 00 and includes Cobham Services, the Brooklands Industrial Estate in Weybridge and Waterside Drive in Walton-on-Thames. The measure is intended to reduce the risk of anti-social driving and to minimise disruption to residents and road users. The order gives officers the power to direct people to leave if they are committing or are likely to commit a criminal offence, and additional patrols will be in place while the order is active.

Insp Chris Thoday, borough commander for Elmbridge, said previous car meets had caused "significant disruption" on the M25 around Cobham Services and described the move as not about spoiling the fun of car enthusiasts but about keeping the area safe.

Train services disrupted after vehicle strikes Hersham bridge

A vehicle struck a bridge at Hersham, blocking some lines towards Woking and causing disruption for trains running from London Waterloo to a long list of destinations: Woking, Guildford, Haslemere, Portsmouth, Southampton, Weymouth, Salisbury, Westbury, Yeovil Junction, Exeter St Davids, Alton and Basingstoke. Trains running between Surbiton station and Weybridge station may be delayed or revised while the lines over the affected bridge remain closed.

Disruption on the rail network is expected to continue until 16: 00. While the bridge is examined, trains will not stop at Esher, Hersham or Walton-on-Thames. Staff are on site to examine the bridge and assist passengers; passengers travelling from London Waterloo towards these stations were advised to travel to Weybridge and catch a return train, and those travelling from Esher, Hersham or Walton-on-Thames towards Woking were advised to travel to Surbiton and take a return service.

Alternative travel, local road closures and wider service impacts

Passengers were urged to allow extra time and check live service updates before travelling. Local buses can be used Traveline for alternative travel, though South Western Railway tickets are not valid on buses unless explicitly stated. The remainder of the line outside the affected sections was operating with good service, but there were severe delays between Acton Town and Uxbridge and minor delays between Acton Town and the Heathrow terminals following an earlier points failure at Heathrow Terminals 2 & 3. Passengers can use London Buses at no extra cost any reasonable route.

On other roads, the A12 Eastern Avenue East at the junction with A12 Colchester Road is fully closed in all directions while the Gallows Corner Flyover undergoes refurbishment, affecting all approaches to the flyover and roundabout; drivers are advised to use alternative routes and allow extra time. The A3031 Albert Bridge Road at the junction with A3212 Chelsea Embankment is closed in both directions for local borough maintenance works, and drivers are advised to seek alternative routes and allow extra time for journeys in the area. Authorities continue to monitor traffic conditions and motorists are advised to plan ahead.
