Julie Drolet Triumphantly Returns to Broadcasting After Battling Cancer

Julie Drolet makes a triumphant return to broadcasting after a challenging battle with cancer. This announcement marks her first appearance back on the air since she stepped away from her role as anchor of Téléjournal midi at Radio-Canada a year and a half ago. Her departure was prompted by a diagnosis of triple-negative breast cancer, an aggressive form of the disease.

Julie Drolet’s Courageous Journey

Julie received her cancer diagnosis in the autumn of 2024. It was a devastating blow, especially given her family history; her father, a well-known hematologist-oncologist, passed away from cancer, and just weeks prior, her sister had also been diagnosed with breast cancer.

Despite the gravity of her situation, Julie remained hopeful. She recalls a particularly difficult moment during her treatment when she was so weak she needed a wheelchair. She even proposed to her friend and director about modifying the set so she could continue broadcasting.

Life Changing Treatments

Initially, a routine mammogram had not indicated any signs of cancer. However, a persistent doctor took the initiative to further investigate, which ultimately saved her life. Julie underwent a series of demanding treatments, including chemotherapy, morphine, and cortisone. Following surgery last summer, she believed she could finally move on, only to learn of a second dormant cancer diagnosis.

  • Diagnosis: Triple-negative breast cancer
  • Treatment: Chemotherapy, morphine, cortisone
  • Surgery: Completed last summer
  • Second diagnosis: Dormant cancer revealed after surgery

Adding Value Through Advocacy

Throughout her journey, Julie was supported by her partner, political analyst Michel C. Auger. They maintained discussions about current events, even during her grueling recovery. To cope with the challenges, Julie began sharing her analysis of American politics on Facebook. This initiative evolved from merely filling her time to creating a noteworthy platform, garnering significant attention.

Return to Broadcasting

Now feeling rejuvenated since last fall, Julie is eager to reclaim her position at Radio-Canada. Starting this week, she will anchor Téléjournal midi twice a week, with plans to expand to four times weekly. Julie expressed her excitement, emphasizing that her return is motivated by passion rather than ambition.

She acknowledged a shift in her perspective following her battle with cancer. “I no longer seek to be at the top of the pyramid to find happiness,” she shared. This journey has led her to reassess her priorities, focusing more on family and personal connections rather than solely on her career.
