Neil Warnock takes temporary charge at Torquay United after Paul Wotton sacked following 5-0 Chelmsford defeat
Neil Warnock has been placed in temporary charge of Torquay United after manager Paul Wotton was sacked following Saturday's 5-0 defeat by Chelmsford City. The change comes amid a sharp downturn in results that has seen Torquay slip from the summit of the National League South to fourth, and the club says an update on interim arrangements will be communicated in due course.
Neil Warnock returns to the Torquay dugout
Neil Warnock, aged 77, will take the team for Tuesday night's fixture with Farnborough and is expected to be in the dugout for the midweek game. Warnock joined Torquay's board as an advisor to the club's new owners in May 2024 and has not managed a club since leaving Aberdeen earlier that year. He announced his retirement from football management in April 2024 after a temporary stint leading Aberdeen.
The veteran boss has an extensive managerial record: he embarked on his managerial career with Gainsborough in 1980, has managed for 46 years, and Torquay will be the 17th club he has managed. Career totals cited in club commentary put his matches overseen at 1, 060, with 392 victories, 293 draws and 375 defeats. He has managed more games than any other boss in English league football and his eight promotions is the most ever achieved.
Warnock previously had a short managerial spell at Torquay in 1993 and has been involved with the club again since being approached by the Bryn Consortium, which took over the Gulls after the club went into administration two years ago.
Paul Wotton sacked after home humbling
Paul Wotton, 48, has left his role as Torquay manager after Saturday's 5-0 home defeat to Chelmsford City. That result proved to be his final game in charge; Wotton had been at the helm at the National League South club since the summer of 2024, having joined the Gulls from Truro City after five years in charge of that Cornish club.
Wotton, a former Plymouth Argyle captain and assistant manager, presided over a seven-game unbeaten run earlier in his tenure but failed to win his final five matches. He admitted that Saturday's loss to Chelmsford was "not acceptable" as his side's title challenge continued to unravel during what was described as their worst run of results all season. Injuries have been a factor: his injury-hit side conceded 12 goals in their past three matches.
During his time in charge, Wotton led Torquay to the brink of the National League title last season; the club were pipped by his former club on goal difference on the final day of the season before exiting the play-offs in the semi-finals.
League position and the immediate impact
A five-game winless run dropped the Gulls from top spot—where they had held a three-point cushion—down to fourth in the National League South, leaving them 10 points adrift of new leaders Dorking Wanderers. The severity of the decline in form made the defeat to Chelmsford the decisive factor in the managerial change.
