Zac Lomax Pursues Eels Exit in Last-Minute Negotiations
Zac Lomax’s future in the NRL hangs in the balance as he seeks an exit from the Parramatta Eels. His legal team is engaged in last-minute negotiations to finalize his release. These talks intensified just before a scheduled NSW Supreme Court hearing on Monday morning.
Zac Lomax’s Bid for Melbourne Storm
Lomax, who left the Eels in November, aimed to join the new rugby union competition, R360. However, that opportunity collapsed when the competition’s launch was delayed. Subsequently, he expressed interest in joining Melbourne Storm for the 2026 season, following their season opener in Las Vegas on Sunday.
Contract Complications
The Eels maintain that Lomax must secure their permission to terminate his $700,000 annual contract for a transfer to another NRL club. In response, Parramatta initiated legal action to protect their interests regarding compensation for Lomax’s potential move to Melbourne.
- Melbourne Storm has made three offers to the Eels to release Lomax.
- The latest proposal was worth $300,000, with $211,000 in salary-cap relief.
- Lomax is represented by notable barrister Adam Casselden SC.
- Parramatta’s CEO, Jim Sarantinos, was present in court, supported by barrister Arthur Moses SC.
The hearing was not held as planned, allowing both parties to seek an out-of-court settlement. Justice Francois Kunc acknowledged their efforts with a quip, granting the requested adjournment.
Implications for the NRL Season
The timing is critical, as closing submissions for the contract case are slated for March 17. This will occur after round two of the season. Justice Kunc will require additional time to deliberate before delivering a decision.
