Shimron Hetmyer in the crosshairs as Karthik urges Bumrah to take new ball

Dinesh Karthik has suggested India start with Jasprit Bumrah in Kolkata to blunt the power of shimron hetmyer and other West Indies hitters in the Super 8 clash, saying an early new-ball spell could force the breakthroughs India need in the powerplay.

Shimron Hetmyer and the West Indies hitting threat

Karthik singled out the danger posed by shimron hetmyer and Romario Shepherd, noting that West Indies' lineup contains players who can change a game quickly. He argued Bumrah’s ability to swing the ball both ways makes him the ideal bowler to attack from the outset and prevent the West Indies from settling into their aggressive approach in the powerplay.

Bumrah's recent spells: South Africa and Zimbabwe

Karthik pointed to Bumrah’s contrasting roles in recent matches as the basis for his suggestion. In the match against South Africa, Bumrah bowled in the second and fourth overs of the powerplay, picked up two wickets while conceding just seven runs in that early period, and finished with figures of 3 for 15. By contrast, in the game against Zimbabwe he bowled around the fifth or sixth over, produced three overs for 0 for 21, and missed what Karthik described as a more opportune window when conditions might have favored swing.

The Zimbabwe match also featured Arshdeep Singh and Hardik Pandya opening the attack, which left Bumrah to bowl later in the powerplay rather than with the new ball.

What Karthik wants and the immediate consequence

Karthik said, "I believe Bumrah should start with the new ball. In the game against Zimbabwe, India won comfortably, but the margin could have been even bigger if Bumrah had bowled at the start. He has the ability to swing the ball both ways. However, he bowled around the 5th or 6th over, and by then, he wasn’t as effective. " He argued that giving Bumrah the new ball in Kolkata would increase India’s chances of early breakthroughs and tighten control of the powerplay.

India enter the Super 8 match as favourites for this must-win clash, and Karthik framed the tactical tweak—opening with Bumrah—as a way to put the West Indies under immediate pressure and potentially curb the impact of big hitters such as Shimron Hetmyer.

India’s Super 8 match against the West Indies in Kolkata remains the next confirmed event in this campaign; the team must balance its opening choices and use of strike bowlers to control the early overs and shape the game.
