Aussie F1 Driver Faces Death Threats, Requires Police Escort

Australian Formula 1 driver Jack Doohan has revealed he faced serious death threats during his time with Alpine. The threats became particularly alarming before the 2025 Miami Grand Prix, prompting the need for heightened security.

Background of Jack Doohan’s F1 Career

The 23-year-old Doohan, son of motorcycle legend Mick Doohan, was announced as Esteban Ocon’s replacement for the 2025 season. He made his F1 debut in Abu Dhabi in the previous year. However, his initial season experienced difficulties, with finishes in the 13th, 15th, 14th, and 17th positions, followed by a did not finish (DNF) in Miami.

Death Threats Before Miami Grand Prix

Doohan disclosed that he received multiple death threats before the Miami race. In a revealing interview, he said, “I got serious death threats for this Grand Prix, saying they’re going to kill me here if I’m not out of the car.” He received around six or seven threatening emails suggesting severe harm if he participated in the race.

To ensure his safety, Doohan required a police escort and additional security measures while attending the event. He reported feeling suffocated by the circumstances, stating, “I wasn’t able to enjoy being a Formula 1 driver, something I dreamt of for so long.”

F1 and Security Response

Formula 1 responded to these threats by increasing Doohan’s security. The organization expressed its commitment to a safe environment, stating, “There is no place for abusive behaviour either online or in person.” They emphasized the community’s solidarity against such actions.

Future Aspirations

After serving as Alpine’s reserve driver for the remainder of the 2025 season, Doohan has since transitioned to Haas. He is set to fulfill the role of reserve driver for the 2026 season, intending to support teammates Ocon and Oliver Beardman.

In a statement, Doohan expressed gratitude for the opportunity to grow with the team, saying, “I’m eager to begin working with the team and collaborating on a successful season.” The upcoming 2026 F1 season is scheduled to kick off on March 8 with the Australian Grand Prix.
