Matt Boldy's Opening Goal: Pure Magic

Team USA grabs the opening goal with its first shot and it's special. Matt Boldy puts the US in the lead with a moment of individual magic. What a move past two Canadian defenders from the Minnesota Wild star — he pops the puck up to split the defenders at the blue line and, with the puck bouncing, manages to get it on his backhand and tuck it around Canadian goalie Jordan Binnington.

Matt Boldy scored six minutes into the first period, as the United States took a 1-0 lead. The assist went to Auston Matthews, who read the play perfectly — Boldy got free after Auston Matthews stole a pass and hit him with an outlet.

Second Period: Canada Pushing Hard, Hellebuyck Holding Firm

Canada came out of the locker room with urgency and McDavid on the hunt. Hellebuyck stopped a shot by Connor McDavid, who got free on the right side with a pass from Nathan MacKinnon in the second period.

One area of improvement for the Canadians heading into the second period was the faceoff circle — it's been an issue throughout this tournament. Nathan MacKinnon was just 50 percent on the draw in the first period. Only Bo Horvat won more faceoffs than he lost.

Key second-period developments so far:

  • Jordan Binnington broke up a Brock Nelson shot from short range for Canada
  • McDavid testing Hellebuyck on the right wing
  • Both teams playing physical — Tom Wilson and the Tkachuk brothers setting the tone

Sidney Crosby Out, McDavid Bears Canada's Weight Alone

Sidney Crosby is not dressed and will not play in the gold medal game today. Canada's all-time great — a two-time Olympic gold medalist who scored the OT winner the last time these teams met in 2010 — is out with the lower-body injury he suffered in the quarterfinal against Czechia. Connor McDavid, who set an Olympic record with 13 points in five games, now carries Canada's burden alone.

What's at Stake: 46 Years of USA Hockey History

The two teams last met in the gold medal game in 2010, which Canada won 3-2 in overtime. Canada also beat Team USA 5-2 in the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympic gold medal game — the only other time the teams met in the final this century. America's only Olympic gold medals in men's hockey came in 1960 and the 1980 "Miracle on Ice."

Mike Eruzione — 46 years to the day after he scored the game-winning goal to beat the Soviet Union — told NBC's Mike Tirico before the game: "This is the best USA team we've ever put on the ice. I really think we get it done today."
