Grohl explained that the initial discussions surrounding Freese’s exit took place during a touring break in 2024. The band spent six to seven months contemplating their musical direction. Ultimately, they reached the consensus to part ways with Freese.

According to Grohl, the band collectively informed Freese of their decision. “We called Josh and were, like, ‘Hey, man, that was awesome. That was such a blast, thank you so much, but we are going to move on and find another drummer,’” he recalled. Grohl noted that Freese expressed feelings about the band’s music not resonating with him, a sentiment echoed in a 2025 interview where Freese stated, “It wasn’t music that I really resonated with.”

Josh Freese’s New Chapter with Nine Inch Nails

After leaving Foo Fighters, Freese rejoined the industrial rock band Nine Inch Nails. He had previously played with them from 2005 to 2008 before stepping back to focus on family commitments.
