Wind Advisory covers parts of Michigan with gusts up to 45 mph Friday

A wind advisory is in effect across large swaths of Michigan on Friday, bringing southwest winds and gusts up to 45 mph that could blow down limbs, scatter unsecured objects and make driving difficult. The advisory affects different regions at slightly different start times and runs through the evening.

Wind Advisory covers west and central Michigan

The National Weather Service’s Grand Rapids office set a wind advisory for portions of southwest and south central Michigan from 7 a. m. Friday ET until 9 p. m. Friday ET, calling for southwest winds of 15 to 30 mph with gusts up to 45 mph. The advisory lists 12 counties by name: Ottawa, Kent, Ionia, Clinton, Allegan, Barry, Eaton, Ingham, Van Buren, Kalamazoo, Calhoun and Jackson. Major cities in that zone include Grand Rapids, Lansing, Kalamazoo, Battle Creek, Jackson, Holland, Grand Haven and South Haven.

Southeast Michigan advisory starts later Friday

For Southeast Michigan, a separate wind advisory covers much of Friday from 10 a. m. to 9 p. m. Friday ET, with southwest winds of 15 to 25 mph and gusts up to 45 mph. The southeast advisory applies to Genesee, Lapeer, Lenawee, Livingston, Macomb, Monroe, Oakland, Shiawassee, Washtenaw and Wayne counties. The official advisory text warns: "Gusty winds will blow around unsecured objects, " adds that "tree limbs could be blown down" and notes that "a few power outages may result. "

What residents should expect Friday

Winds will ramp up through the morning in the affected areas, with the strongest gusts likely during the afternoon hours. Officials say winds this strong can make driving difficult, especially for high-profile vehicles, and they advise drivers to use extra caution. The advisories note specific impacts: unsecured outdoor items may be blown about, tree limbs could fall, and a few localized power outages are possible.

The wind advisory for the listed counties is in place until 9 p. m. Friday ET. High winds are expected to usher in colder, wet weather for the weekend, and residents in the named counties are being asked to secure loose objects and take care on the roads while the advisory remains active.
