Barroco Grill, Hola Tacos Owners Suddenly Close Several Locations
Lakewood, Ohio has witnessed a significant shift in its dining landscape as Barroco Grill and Hola Tacos owners, Carlos and Juan Vergara, have announced the closure of several locations. The family-run enterprise began with a modest café in 2011 and quickly became a local favorite.
Barroco Grill: A Brief History
When Carlos and Juan opened Barroco Grill, it was a 12-seat establishment. Located in Lakewood, the eatery gained immediate popularity for its delicious arepa sandwiches and Colombian street food. To accommodate the growing demand, the restaurant expanded from 12 to over 80 seats by utilizing space in the back.
In 2017, the Vergaras ventured into new territory by opening a location on Larchmere in Cleveland. The year after, they established a westside outlet at Crocker Park. Unfortunately, this week marked the closure of both the Lakewood and Westlake Barroco Grill locations.
Hola Tacos Closure
In addition to the Barroco Grill closures, Hola Tacos in Lakewood has also been put on hiatus until spring. Juan Vergara explained that the reason for these closures is not due to a decline in business, but rather personal family health matters. “We, as a family, are beginning to take a step back,” he stated.
The Lakewood location of Barroco Grill was their first and busiest, making its closure particularly poignant. Despite the sadness of this moment, Vergara expressed pride in reflecting on their journey. “We’ve given so much over the years: the growth, the mistakes, and the accomplishments,” he shared.
Future of Remaining Locations
While the Lakewood and Crocker Park locations of Barroco Grill are closed, the site on Larchmere remains in operation. This is due to a collaborative arrangement with La Pecora Pizzabar located next door. Additionally, Amazonia, which features cocktail and wood-fired pizza offerings, will continue to serve customers.
Vergara indicated that future plans may involve transferring the remaining locations to capable operators. “These are strong stores for us and they are not ending,” he commented.
Summary of Recent Changes
