Apple Begins Testing End-to-End Encrypted RCS Messaging on iPhone

Apple is making strides towards enhancing its messaging system by testing end-to-end encrypted (E2EE) RCS messaging. This effort began with the developer beta of iOS 26.4, released on Monday.

Testing Phase for E2EE RCS Messaging

The initial phase of testing is limited to encrypted RCS messaging on Apple devices. Currently, the implementation does not support cross-platform messaging with Android or other devices.

Future Availability of E2EE RCS Features

  • Apple confirmed that E2EE RCS messaging will not be part of the iOS 26.4 public release.
  • The feature is anticipated to debut in a future software update.

This enhancement will enable iPhone and Android users to exchange messages securely. The introduction of RCS messages marks a significant improvement in the texting experience across different device platforms.

Background and Upcoming Developments

The GSM Association has been actively working on RCS improvements. In September 2024, they announced plans to integrate E2EE messaging as part of the RCS Universal Profile’s next major milestone.

Apple expressed commitment to supporting E2EE RCS messaging across its devices, including iOS, iPadOS, macOS, and watchOS, in forthcoming updates. The announcement in March 2025 highlighted Apple’s intention to enhance security and functionality in its messaging services.
