Las Vegas Raiders Promote Rob Leonard, Retain Joe Woods on Coaching Staff

The Las Vegas Raiders are undergoing significant changes as new head coach Klint Kubiak begins to structure his coaching staff. Two recent appointments have made headlines: Rob Leonard has been promoted to defensive coordinator, and Joe Woods will remain as defensive pass game coordinator.

Rob Leonard Takes the Helm as Defensive Coordinator

Rob Leonard has been a part of the Raiders organization since 2023. Initially serving as the defensive line coach, he played a crucial role under previous defensive coordinator Patrick Graham. Following Graham’s move to the Pittsburgh Steelers, Kubiak has recognized Leonard’s contributions by elevating him to the position of defensive coordinator.

In addition to his new responsibilities, Leonard held the title of defensive run game coordinator last season. Under his guidance, the Raiders’ defense ranked 17th in total rushing yards allowed but excelled in limiting opponents to an average of just four yards per carry.

Joe Woods Continues His Role

Joining Leonard in the defensive strategy for the Raiders is Joe Woods, who will continue as the defensive pass game coordinator. Woods has a wealth of experience, having spent his previous seasons as the defensive coordinator for both the Cleveland Browns and the New Orleans Saints. His tenure with the Saints overlapped with Kubiak for one year, allowing them to build a rapport.

In 2025, the Raiders ranked 14th in passing yards allowed under Woods’ guidance, showcasing their potential in defending against notable offenses.

Kubiak’s Coaching Staff Expansion

The promotions of Leonard and Woods represent the second and third major additions to Kubiak’s inaugural coaching staff. Earlier this week, Mike McCoy, who has experience as the head coach for the San Diego Chargers and as the interim head coach for the Tennessee Titans, was appointed as the assistant head coach.

  • Rob Leonard: Promoted to Defensive Coordinator
  • Joe Woods: Retaining role as Defensive Pass Game Coordinator
  • Mike McCoy: Joined as Assistant Head Coach

As Kubiak builds his team, fans will be eager to see how these coaching decisions shape the Raiders’ performance in the upcoming season.
