Fiala Stretchered Off Ice in Switzerland Defeat

Kevin Fiala was stretchered off the ice during a critical match for Team Switzerland against Team Canada. This incident occurred late in the third period of their Group A game at the Olympic Winter Games Milano Cortina 2026, held at the Santagiulia Arena.

Injury Details

Fiala’s injury took place at 17:10 in the third period when Canada’s Tom Wilson collided with him, leading to a serious situation. The impact caused Fiala to lie face down on the ice, struggling to move his legs. Despite showing some upper body movement, he was ultimately unable to get up without assistance.

Hospitalization and Surgery

After the incident, Fiala was promptly taken to a local hospital. On Saturday, Switzerland announced that he had undergone surgery and would miss the remainder of the Olympics. Team Switzerland’s coach, Patrick Fischer, expressed concern, stating, “Obviously, it doesn’t look very good.”

Reactions from Teammates and Opponents

While discussing the incident, Tom Wilson described the play as a common occurrence in the NHL, emphasizing it was an unfortunate accident. “I feel terrible that he may not be able to keep playing,” Wilson noted, sending well wishes to Fiala and his family.

Fellow Swiss teammate, Nico Hischier, expressed that Wilson did not mean to injure Fiala and referred to the collision as an unfortunate twist of fate. He stated, “It seemed like an innocuous play.”

Canada’s defenseman Drew Doughty, who is also Fiala’s teammate at the Los Angeles Kings, conveyed his concern, stating, “We need that guy on my team back home, big time.”

Fiala’s Performance and Future

Before this injury, Fiala contributed significantly to his team’s efforts. He had recorded an assist in Switzerland’s 4-0 victory over Team France prior to the game against Canada. This season, the 29-year-old has achieved 40 points, comprising 18 goals and 22 assists in 56 games for the Kings.

Upcoming Matches

Switzerland, now standing at 1-0-1-0 in Olympic play, is set to face Czechia next. This matchup on Sunday is vital for ranking in Group A, as the winner will secure the second position.

Captain Roman Josi emphasized the emotional impact of Fiala’s injury on the team. “He’s a huge player for us, such a great player and great person. So, we’re hoping for the best,” he said.
