During a recent Olympic hockey matchup between the United States and Denmark, a notable gesture occurred as two fans raised a Greenland flag. This display was interpreted as a symbol of European solidarity with both Greenland and Denmark.
European Support at the Olympics
The fans, Vita Kalniņa and her husband, Alexander Kalniņš, live in Germany and are supporters of the Latvian hockey team. They showcased the large red and white Greenland flag during the warmups and each time Denmark scored, before the U.S. emerged victorious with a score of 6-3.
Kalniņš explained their motivations, stating, “For us as Europeans it was important to show up with this symbol as a symbol of European unity that we support Greenland.” Recent comments from former President Donald Trump regarding Greenland have fueled national pride in Denmark, heightening support for the island across Europe.

Despite their intentions, Kalniņa and Kalniņš faced a restriction from venue staff, who directed them to take down the flag due to supposed safety concerns.
