Henson Park Secures Future for Upcoming Generations
The completion of Henson Park’s $20 million renovation marks a significant milestone for one of Sydney’s historic sporting venues. This ambitious project not only upgrades the facility but also secures its future for generations to come.
Henson Park: A Legacy Renewed
Located in the heart of the Inner West, Henson Park has long been a staple in the Sydney sporting community. Originally built for the 1938 Empire Games, the venue’s King George V Grandstand and other facilities were in urgent need of modernization. The renovations began last year with a focus on enhancing the player experience, particularly for women.
Recent Upgrades and Facilities
The recent phase of renovations included the construction of a new multipurpose building. Key improvements include:
- A revamped grandstand with repairs to the first-floor seating area and new accessibility features.
- Updated player amenities featuring female-friendly change rooms and accessible toilets.
- A new building at the rear, which hosts a gym and community function space.
- Modern coaches’ boxes and broadcasting facilities to enhance media coverage.
- Improved public amenities including baby change facilities.
This project was made possible through joint funding from the Inner West Council, NSW AFL, and financial support from both the Federal and NSW governments.
Importance of Henson Park for the Community
Inner West Mayor Darcy Byrne emphasized the community value of Henson Park. He stated that the upgrades will enhance the experience for players, officials, and fans alike.
“Henson Park is the heart and soul of Inner West sport,” Mayor Byrne noted during the announcement. “This renovation ensures that it remains a vibrant and memorable venue for all.”
Upcoming Events
The revitalized grounds will celebrate their official reopening on February 15, 2026. This event will coincide with a highly anticipated trial match between the Newtown Jets and the Cronulla Sharks. Fans wishing to attend can purchase tickets online or at the venue on game day.
Member for Summer Hill, Jo Haylen, also praised the renovations, highlighting the importance of accommodating all community members at sporting events. “Whether it’s grassroots or elite level, our facilities should serve everyone,” she remarked.
With these enhancements, Henson Park is poised to continue its legacy as a premier sports venue and maintain its status as a home for the Newtown Jets and Sydney’s AFL teams.
