Lindsey Vonn Updates Fans Post-Olympic Crash: “Long Road Ahead” – The Athletic
Lindsey Vonn has shared updates about her recovery after her serious crash during the Olympic women’s downhill event. The American Alpine skiing icon posted a video on social media platforms X and Instagram detailing her ongoing health challenges.
Lindsey Vonn’s Condition After Olympic Crash
Vonn, who suffered a complex tibia fracture in her left leg, revealed she is facing multiple surgeries. “It’s been quite a hard few days in the hospital here,” she stated, expressing optimism about eventually returning home.
Details of the Incident
The crash occurred just 13 seconds into her downhill run. Vonn hooked a gate with her right arm, causing her to lose balance and crash violently into the snow. Immediately following the incident, she was airlifted to a hospital in Treviso, located approximately 80 miles from the Olympia delle Tofane slope in Cortina d’Ampezzo, where the accident took place.
Current Recovery Status
- Vonn has undergone three surgeries since the accident.
- She mentioned needing another surgery, awaiting better imaging results for a clearer understanding of her condition.
- Despite her immobility, Vonn has received support from friends and family.
In her latest video update, Vonn expressed gratitude for the letters and gifts she has received, stating that the medical staff has been “amazing.” She also took the time to cheer on Team USA during the Olympics, sharing how it has lifted her spirits.
Previous Injuries and Comeback Journey
Before the Olympics, Vonn’s return to Alpine skiing was remarkable. After a five-year hiatus forced by a series of leg injuries, she made her comeback in November 2024, following a partial knee replacement that left her pain-free. During the 2024 World Cup season, she led the downhill standings with two wins and maintained a strong presence in every race she entered.
Challenges Leading Up to the Olympics
However, the days leading up to the Olympics were not without struggles. On January 30, 2024, Vonn crashed during a downhill race in Crans-Montana, Switzerland, just over a week before the Games. Afterward, she revealed a torn ACL but expressed her determination to compete.
Legacy in Alpine Skiing
At 41, Vonn aimed to become the oldest woman to medal at the Olympics, surpassing Italy’s Federica Brignone. Vonn holds 84 World Cup wins, ranking third all-time, along with three Olympic medals and eight world championship medals. This season was supposed to be her final one as she expressed concerns about her age and the physical demands of skiing.
As Vonn continues her recovery, the skiing community and her fans remain hopeful for her return to health and future endeavors in the sport.
