FBI releases description of suspect in Nancy Guthrie kidnapping
The FBI has provided the first formal physical description of the man believed to have abducted 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie from her Tucson-area home on the evening of January 31 ET, as investigators continue a widespread search and follow thousands of tips.
Physical description and distinctive gear
Federal investigators say the suspect is a male roughly 5 ft 9 in to 5 ft 10 in tall with an average build. Forensic analysis of doorbell camera footage enabled officials to identify clothing and items of interest: a 25-litre Ozark Trail hiker pack and dark clothing. Investigators also recovered a pair of black gloves during the search of the area.
Doorbell footage and forensic analysis
Investigators have analysed doorbell-camera video from outside Guthrie's home and used that footage to draw the physical description released this week. Forensic work on the images allowed officials to isolate identifying features and the backpack model, which became a key focus of the public appeal for information.
Search efforts, tips and increased reward
The disappearance prompted a large investigative effort that has generated a significant public response. Since February 1 ET, investigators say they have received more than 13, 000 tips overall, with roughly 4, 000 of those calls coming within 24 hours after the doorbell video was released. The reward for information leading to Guthrie's return has been increased from $50, 000 to $100, 000.
Investigation developments and DNA work
Authorities executed at least one search warrant in a nearby community after a man was briefly detained and later released. That individual said he did not know Nancy Guthrie. Officials have also been working to identify DNA recovered during the probe, though the location where the material was found has not been disclosed. Sheriff Chris Nanos warned that Guthrie may be in dire health without her medication, saying she is "not in good physical health" but has no reported cognitive issues.
Family appeals and public reaction
Guthrie's daughter has made repeated public appeals, and family members have urged anyone with information to come forward. They have expressed the belief that she remains alive and have even indicated they would be willing to pay for her return. The case has drawn intense attention nationwide, prompting calls for tips and heightened scrutiny of investigative steps taken so far.
What authorities are asking of the public
Investigators continue to seek anyone who may have seen the suspect or the backpack described, or who has dash-cam or doorbell footage from the Tucson area on the night of January 31 ET. Officials stress the importance of preserving any potential footage and reporting it to law enforcement so analysts can compare images and leads. The doubled reward underscores the priority officials are placing on locating Guthrie and gathering information that could lead investigators to her.
The investigation remains active and ongoing. Authorities have appealed for patience from the public while they follow multiple lines of inquiry and continue forensic work on physical evidence.
